Portreath, Still Life and Roast Chicken

Our walk today, 600 yards (!) took us alongside the harbour at Portreath. The boats were bobbing about even in the inner harbour and the swell of the water fine to watch as it raced along the harbour wall. This is a working harbour with lots of fishing boats.

The setting sunlight caught this lovely still life, ‘Striped Jug and Pears’ by Ben Jones, a Cornish artist, giving it an added dimension this evening.

Daughter No 1 leaves us tomorrow after a week of sharing the caring and taking over the cooking. Tonight’s dinner was a beautifully roasted chicken with lots of vegetables and a scrumptious gravy. It has been lovely to have her here for so long.

Moth, Card and War Photographer

I noticed a moth fluttering in the garden, went out as quickly as I could on crutches and it waited for me! I haven’t been able to identify it. Can anyone help?

There was a lovely surprise in the post this morning, a card from a very kind blogging friend in Louisville, Kentucky! Thank you so much, Marilyn.

It is the 80th birthday of the war photographer, Don McCullin. Carol Ann Duffy wrote this remarkable poem about him and his work which I find very moving as did my GCSE pupils. Don McCullin is on Radio 4 now in the programme Front Row, worth listening to on iPlayer if you are able to as he talks about the influences of war photography and that the photographer has to do ‘what someone must.’

War Photographer – Carol Ann Duffy

In his dark room he is finally alone
with spools of suffering set out in ordered rows.
The only light is red and softly glows,
as though this were a church and he
a priest preparing to intone a Mass.
Belfast. Beirut. Phnom Penh. All flesh is grass.

He has a job to do. Solutions slop in trays
beneath his hands, which did not tremble then
though seem to now. Rural England. Home again
to ordinary pain which simple weather can dispel,
to fields which don’t explode beneath the feet
of running children in a nightmare heat.

Something is happening. A stranger’s features
faintly start to twist before his eyes,
a half-formed ghost. He remembers the cries
of this man’s wife, how he sought approval
without words to do what someone must
and how the blood stained into foreign dust.

A hundred agonies in black and white
from which his editor will pick out five or six
for Sunday’s supplement. The reader’s eyeballs prick
with tears between the bath and pre-lunch beers.
From the aeroplane he stares impassively at where
he earns his living and they do not care.

Gylly Beach, Pink Flower and Sarawak Laska

Today’s walk was along Cliff Road above Gylly Beach where there is a long flat walk which is what I need at the moment. The sea was quite choppy and, of course, beautiful!

Along the way was a small bush that may have been Lavatera but I am not sure as the flowers were much more blowsy than usual.

For Father’s Day earlier this year, the kids bought the lovely Mr S a subscription to The Spicery and tonight Daughter No 1 cooked Sarawak Laska which was absolutely delicious. The Spicery kits are brilliant! They come with all the spices needed, very clear instructions and a heat rating! I didn’t add the Sambal Balacan which was much hotter than suits me.

Waves, Reflection and Friendship

The sea in these pictures is the same still sea that we visited yesterday but in a very different mood. Today the waves – and the surfers – were back in Chapel Porth.

We also watched a family having a lovely time in the gentler surf at the edge of the water. I was pleased to catch their reflections in the retreating water.

Our special friend N came to spend several hours with me today so that the lovely Mr S and Daughter No 1 could go out for a sail. That was a very pleasing morning and our lunch of homegrown Watercress soup, delicious.

The Seaside, Ice-cream and Gladioli

I have been to see the sea today! The sea at Chapel Porth was the quietest we have ever seen it. Usually it is full of surfers, today there were lots of swimmers enjoying the unusually flat sea. It was fabulous to get my lungs full of sea air.

It was just as pleasing to have a special ice-cream, a Foxy, which is Cornish ice-cream, topped with Cornish cream and then rolled in Flapjack crumbs! Can you imagine anything more delicious? Thank you, Rose.

The other day my lovely friend, A, brought some Gladioli that she hoped would open to be purple and white with green foliage. They are now open and very beautiful.

Blue Light Babies, Violas and A Walk

As I recover, I need things to do and I have started knitting for Blue Light Babies. This group is aiming to provide every ambulance in the country with little hats and blankets, especially for babies who are born under the blue light as they arrive in the world before arriving at the hospital. They have also asked for slightly bigger sizes for slightly older babies who need to travel under the blue light to get the help they need. One of my twins once had to travel from Yorkshire to Guy’s Hospital in London and the last part was a very frightening blue light ride.

I picked the last of the tiny Violas from our edible garden today so that we can sow winter salad leaves there – and maybe some winter flowering pansies….

I have walked over 100 yards this afternoon! I’m feeling much stronger and am itching to get going! It’ll be three weeks on Wednesday since my op was done and I’m feeling happy!

New Butterfly, Sunlight and Blue Sky

We saw something rare and beautiful this morning on the side of our dustbin – a newly emerged butterfly with its chrysalis right there beside it.

High pressure has brought us a glorious Autumn day today, warm enough to sit outdoors with Daughter No 1 who has arrived to help out for the next week. The sunlight pattern through the leaves was lovely enhanced by the last blue Cornflowers.

The sky has been the loveliest blue all day.

Autumn in the Air, Callianthus and A Visit

There is a definite Autumnal chill in the air today as I discovered on my foray into the garden. There are still lots of flowers in bloom and I was delighted to see the Japanese Anemones catching the sunlight.

20150905-202705.jpg
The Agapanthus are still regally gorgeous, such a rich dark blue and looking good with the burgundy blotched white Callianthus in the foreground and orange and deep magenta of other blooms behind them.

Another good friend called in this afternoon bringing with her the last of her beautiful Sweet peas the scent of which is filling the room as I write. She also brought some delicious freshly baked Cheese scones. We had a lovely hour laughing and putting the world to rights!

The Duty of Kindness to Strangers

I have been following this lovely blog for several years. In this beautiful post, Sharon echoes many of my thoughts and the heartache that we share about the refugee crisis. Be kind to each other, fellow humans. Thank you, Sharon.

Yellow Poppy

There is just one beautiful yellow poppy in flower looking lovely against the glossy dark leaves of the Choisya.
