Purple Beans, Recipe and An Old Utensil

Yesterday, our lovely neighbour brought us some beans from her allotment. They were a beautiful purple colour but, we were warned, maybe a bit stringy. I decided to use my own recipe  for Runner Bean Soup and made a wonderfully tasty lunch. It pleases me greatly that my recipe is so well used. If you google Runner Bean Soup, it comes up on the first page. Interestingly,  my photo of my soup is used on the Jamie Oliver recipe!

Because of the stringiness, I put the soup though a sieve and used my Mum’s old wooden pestle to push it through very easily. The result was a lovely creamy soup though, sadly, not purple. Sorry, we ate it before I could take a photo!

Birthdays, Jigsaw and A Good Read

Forty eight years ago today, I held my new baby twins for the first time, two beautiful babies born either side of midnight so having their own birthdays!  Here they are at about two years old.

We’ve just finished a jigsaw that daughter no 2 bought for us, lovely memories of a holiday in Venice with my Dad as we did this one. It was a particularly poignant memory  as he had always loved Italy and this was his last holiday before suddenly losing his sight a few months later..

I’ve just finished reading this one and thoroughly enjoyed it. One of my lovely friends lent it to me but I can’t remember which one! I’ve asked two but to no avail so if it was you, please tell me so that I can return it!.

Cake, Seedlings and Squash

I decorated the cake with lemon icing and we all sang Happy Birthday to our esteemed leader!

Lemon and Chocolate Marble Cake

There were very many seedlings, brassicas and salad leaves,  to pot on today and we had a team of eight volunteers on the job.

The squash harvest is in. Thanks to Amy for the beautiful photos.

Park, Ducklings and Tea-Cosies

After a lovely breakfast with friends in Truro, we took a short walk in Boscawen Park. The flower borders are still looking lovely, I like the design of the signs and I loved watching the ducklings.

Afterwards when shopping I saw some quirky  and very attractive tea-cosies made by Poppy Treffrey,  a maker and designer I have only just become aware of but whose website is a delight. See it here.

Rain, A Treat and A Posy

After a month with no rain, we have had a deluge. Over two days our wheelbarrow has filled right up and a couple of Petunia flowers from the window box have fallen in. I love these photos, especially the middle one with the autumny leaves at the bottom of the water.

After going to the library this morning we had lunch in the Redruth Buttermarket and I bought some Cinnamon Buns from Filthy Foccacia to have with our tea when our friends came round. It was wickedly scrumptious.

Friends came round this afternoon and brought us a lovely little posy of flowers from their garden.

Cream Tea, Dinner and Solidarity

Friends we haven’t seen for too long came around today and we had a Cornish Cream Tea with home-made Strawberry freezer jam and a good dollop of Cornish Cream.

Most unexpectedly and very pleasingly, they brought with them dinner for us two tonight, Jerk Chicken, so all I had to do tonight was heat it up and boil some rice. It was delicious.

Thank you so much, M.

I told you a few weeks ago about what local artists have been doing to raise awareness about Palestine. If you are local, here’s what can happen next.

Seeds of Friendship

Before going to Roots today, I went  to Portreath to join a Seeds of Friendship workshop.

It was a lovely event with everyone working on one of the suggestions on the board.

I made a friendship bracelet and S made a pin badge which she then gave to me.

Apples, Plums and Cakes

Last week at Roots, one of our lovely volunteers brought spare apples from her tree for us all to have. When our friends visited last week, they brought a big bag of really delicious plums. I have spent much of the day baking, first Ukrainian Apple Cake, Yabluchnyk, a long job but so worth it. It is utterly delicious!  Then I got to work on the plums and made Plum, Chocolate and Almond Cake which we know we love and which is going in the freezer for later. Thanks to friends we have two scrumptious cakes!

I think the volunteers will enjoy these two. 🙂

Posy, Wall Hanging and Useful Words

I picked a little posy of marigolds and purple sweet peas today.

I love the wall hanging seen a couple of weeks ago in Truro Cathedral that says thank you to their volunteers.

The following very useful information came my way today and I thought you might appreciate it.

With thanks to Steve Bartlett

We’ve had a lovely time today as friends we made on holiday in Tuscany last year came to visit, brought us lunch and lifted our spirits enormously. As on holiday, we talked and talked, laughed and laughed and shared so much that matters.

Soup, Topper and Pollinators

We had the most delicious soup for lunch today, Red Pepper soup, brought to us by dear friends.

Red Pepper Soup. Thanks M x

Exercise for Mr S now includes a short walk along our road to the post box where there was a delightful new topper of ice creams and ice lollies.

I’ve been talking with a fellow blogger about the lack of butterflies this summer but we do have some pollinators.
