Community Roots and Penzance

Another busy morning at Roots for us both. The wonderful pumpkin harvest is in the store room, a gorgeous baby came with his Mum and was entertained by various volunteers and we had Roots soup for our lunch.

After a visit to Penzance hospital for a scan on my ankle in preparation possibly for a new ankle (If I decide to go ahead, they’ll 3D print the parts using the CT scan as a guide!) we took a walk along the front.

Concert, Charities and A Badge

For the song we were singing, Sithi Malweni, when this photo was taken at the concert last night at the Eco Park,  I had left the tenors and moved to the sopranos as I love their part and it’s not too high for me.

We were collecting for our charities last night, ShelterBox, Penhaligon’s Friends and we raised an amazing £931!    What a wonderfully generous audience and choir.  We also collected items for the local food bank. These trollies are full of what we collected.

Here are the flowers, card and special badge that we gave Claire. The stitching on the badge,  ‘Lead in love’ is from one of our songs, “We Shall be Known” and is the way our wonderful leader, Claire, leads at all times.

Concert and Scarf

I’ve spent the day practising songs for our annual concert this evening. Two of the songs are fresh in our repertoire and I think I was not the only one feeling a bit trepidatious about performing them to an audience. In fact, it was brilliant and we went down a storm!

We wear black and red for performances so it’s a chance for me to wear a really beautiful scarf that gets few outings.

Pumpkin, Jigsaw and Alice Roberts

Hallowe’en is arriving in town.

We finished a delightful puzzle today.

I’ve been to a fascinating Evening with Alice Roberts, a book promotion tour.

Ponies, Posy and Plaque

Technically these are not ponies but I liked the alliteration. It’s only height that determines pony or horse so maybe the smaller one that you can hardly see here does qualify. These two are in the field at the bottom of our garden and always come close when I call ‘Hello!’

We visited friends  for an afternoon of chat and laughter and took a small garden posy with us.

We drove by a splendid plaque that is on the wall by the station and stopped long enough at the lights for me to get a photo. I love the red section with the words, ‘Love, Kindness, Community, Friendship, Respect ‘ to sum up our town. I’m sorry I don’t know the artist. .

Oranges and A Poem

Next week I’m going to a  Bay Leaf Wreath Workshop and I’ve been dehydrating orange slices for added decoration. This is my first batch.

I found this poem today. It’s called Jigsaw and is by Matt Goodfellow.  Regular readers will know we like doing jigsaws but more than that, the philosophy expressed here beautifully simply is so needed right now.

A Letter, A Book Club and Threads

I wrote a letter to The Guardian yesterday in answer to someone belonging to a book club but who couldn’t read each book in only four weeks.   They published it today, and I discovered this evening that 15 people have joined the ShelterBox book club as a result of reading my letter! I am delighted.

I needed some red thread to mend my red leather wallet so went to my Mum’s cotton collection and found one to match, of course! I have kept the drawers from the sewing cabinet my Grandpa made for her to her design when she was eighteen. That was in 1933 – I’ve never worked that out before.   Almost every reel is wooden and one has the price on it, 23p.

Eggs, Seedlings and A Posy

Every week we get eggs from friends’ chickens, all carefully dated and seeing the new dozen in the rack always makes us smile, especially when they are such varying sizes.

The winter salad seedlings are being planted out today, all on the grid so that they are equally spaced.

There was an event in the Big Shed at Roots last weekend and this is one of the vases of gathered flowers, seed heads and chard leaves used to decorate the tables.

Cake, Scarf and A Poem

We had a few bananas in the freezer that needed using up so I made a Banana, Pecan and Raisin Cake for tomorrow.

As Nancy suggested, I decided to make a scarf with the lovely sprkly yarn I showed you a while ago..I think it will take me some time!

I found this piece the other day . It’s a good philosophy to live by!

More Weeds, Pumpkins and Dahlias

Today our weeding has been at the allotment. Over the last three months we have been unable to look after it properly and the weeds have filled the paths as well as the beds. My job was to clear the main path. My lovely Mr S worked on the beds this afternoon. Photos later

I walked around the plots afterwards and found produce and flowers.

We should plant some dahlias for next year, lovely colours for the Autumn..
