Daily Stuff, Clematis and Red Leaves

Storm Callum has been beating its way across Cornwall today and we have mostly stayed indoors doing the everyday stuff. This poem by Naomi Shibab Nye, Daily,  seems the right one for today though no washing was hung outside!

Daily - Naomi Shihab Nye
These shriveled seeds we plant,
corn kernel, dried bean,
poke into loosened soil,
cover over with measured fingertips

These T-shirts we fold into
perfect white squares

These tortillas we slice and fry to crisp strips
This rich egg scrambled in a gray clay bowl

This bed whose covers I straighten
smoothing edges till blue quilt fits brown blanket
and nothing hangs out

This envelope I address
so the name balances like a cloud
in the center of sky

This page I type and retype
This table I dust till the scarred wood shines
This bundle of clothes I wash and hang and wash again
like flags we share, a country so close
no one needs to name it

The days are nouns: touch them
The hands are churches that worship the world

The Clematis over the arch is hanging very low making it hard to get through – but I love how it looks this late into the season. Even after the storm, it is still looking good though blown about all day. We still have dangerous winds to come…….

Yesterday in Penryn, these richly coloured leaves caught my attention.

Eeyore, Window Boxes and Nasturtiums

It is World Mental Health Day and this came my way:

Thought of the Day, Willesdenstaff Kilburn Station. What fabulous staff at that station!

I was walking through Penryn today and saw that the owner of this car has planted for the winter. I just love these little car-window boxes.

Next door’s Nasturtiums have come over the hedge and are tumbling over our winter covered bench.

Day 18 – Together

Friday 20th September 2018

A peaceful family day with  lots of relaxing and chatting together, sharing recipes  and family stuff. On our walk for lunch we spotted a tiny door in the wall….

Cakes to make; I’ll be trying the Hummingbird Cake!

Door…

Lunch was a delicious and very American burger.

Walk Around Swanpool

It has been another glorious sunny Autumn day today so this afternoon I walked around Swanpool, a peaceful and gentle place to be.

And, just for interest – this is a photo, not taken by me, of what has happened to Porthminster Beach in St Ives after a recent big storm. There’s another due at the weekend.  The ‘cliff’ is said to be 30ft high!

Days 16 and 17 – Leaving Arizona, Arriving Atlanta

Wednesday 19th September 2018

This morning we drove to Phoenix, dropped off the car – we have driven 1,506 miles, through mountains and deserts, through small towns and farmland and have flown to Atlanta, Georgia to spend the next four days with my lovely Brother and Sister-in-law.  It will be good to stop moving for a few days!

Thursday 20th September

My Dear SIL planned a treat for us for today – a trip to Atlanta’s beautiful Botanical Gardens and an evening performance of Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Gardens and what a treat that turned out to be! The garden was a story book delight! All the characters are made out of plants and are exquisite.

We didn’t manage to see everything on this visit as we had to have dinner and make our way to the Theatre space which was on the 63ft wide pond! It was still very hot – it had been a very humid 29C earlier and so, along with the ticket, each member of the audience was given a fan, a lovely gesture.

I’m a Theatre Fan!

The play was an absolute delight, sparkling from start to finish with just six actors taking all the parts and clearly loving every minute as we did.

Gylly Beach, Egret and High Tide

I had a delightful walk along Cliff Road today in bright sunshine. Unexpectedly I met a couple of lovely friends so we sat and chatted for an hour or so looking out over the sea.

Our view

I then went to Freeman’s Wharf where the lovely Mr S and daughter No1 are working on the boat. We had Cornish pasties for lunch together on the quayside and watched the Egret fishing at low tide.

As I left the tide had turned and was coming in.

Reflections, tide coming in

As the workers left the yard, the tide was right up and M took this photo for me of the water lapping at the car park.

Road Trip Day 15 – Monument Valley and Flagstaff

Dawn over the Mittens at Monument Valley – what a treat for the last full day of our road trip.

Dawn

Sunrise

We drove to Flagstaff  after breakfast to spend the night with our friends with whom we have spent the last few days having amazing adventures. Their garden in the desert is full of colour – a tribute to the gardeners – and the Hummingbirds love their sugar feeder.

Navajo Wall Hanging, Dye Chart and 3D Printed Vase

While we were at The Hubble Trading Post, we treated ourselves to a beautiful piece of Navajo weaving and then, when we were in Monument Valley, also on Navajo Nation  lands, we found a pretty dye chart which shows some of the natural dyes used in the making of the rugs and wall hangings.

Our eldest daughter is visiting for a while to help winterise the boat and she brought a couple of presents with her, elegant 3D printed vases, one red and one black, shapes that would be impossible to make in any other way.

Road Trip Day 14 – Monument Valley

 Monday 17th September 2018

Today, a drive through more incredible landscapes from Colorado to Utah and Monument Valley, that landscape known to many from the  ‘movies.’
