Beautiful Message, Puy Lentils and The Family Bible

20 Jun

1  I received a beautiful message from Ammar this morning that has set me up for the day.  He was saying thank you for the lovely time we all spent together last week

2   I made the simplest and one of the most tasty lunches today – Puy Lentils with Tomatoes, Basil and Mozzarella and we ate it with a selection of leaves from our garden.

3    I had an email from my brother today about our reunion in July and asking if he could take The Family Bible back to Munich with him as it should be with him as he is the oldest of the four of us. That prompted me to go to it to have another look. A Family Bible has pages between the Old and New Testaments for the family to record Births, Marriages and Deaths so this is an invaluable family document. It was a present to my Great Grandmother on her marriage in 1885.  There is a red marker between Luke IX and X but unfortunately I don’t know its significance.

I am a Humanist, not a Christian, nevertheless I find this a most beautiful book. It contains some amazing historical coloured maps of biblical regions, which have changed dramatically over the last 128 years.

Have a look through the gallery below for lots of fascinating photos.

our family was wanderers so we do not have something as precious as a family bible, it is a beautiful family treasure that is for sure. May I ask what is a Humanist? I never heard of the term before. Blessings ~ Patty

Hello, I’m sorry I haven’t replied to this for some time.

To answer your question – Humanists…
“…are atheists and agnostics who make sense of the world using reason, experience and shared human values. We take responsibility for our actions and base our ethics on the goals of human welfare, happiness and fulfilment. We seek to make the best of the one life we have by creating meaning and purpose for ourselves, individually and together.”

From Pears Cyclopaedia, 87th edition, 1978 “That man should show respect to man, irrespective of class, race or creed is fundamental to the humanist attitude to life. Among the fundamental moral principles, he would count those of freedom, justice, tolerance and happiness…the attitude that people can live an honest, meaningful life without following a formal religious creed.

I hope this explains my thoughts and beliefs. I believe in the inherent goodness of the human and that we have to look after this beautiful world and love this world and all the people in it.

All the best to you 🙂

Puy lentils are one of my favourites, but haven’t had them with tomato, basil and mozzarella – sounds like a good combo, think I’ll be trying it soon!

Wow, fancy having a Family Bible. That’s interesting. It’s very precious, really. Love the pictures (& I like lentils too 🙂 )

Yes indeed this is a very important link to your family
and I guess I can understand your brother wishing to
take it back with him, though being that the bible is in
your safe keeping I see no reason why you could not
keep it with you for the time being, as one day it will
passed down to another member of your family, thus
keeping the bible where it belongs. You are right, the
bible that documents your family is a very nice book
with some wonderful and interesting features inside,
I wonder what the significance of the red marker is,
or could it simply be where one of your family was
reading and just added it to retain the exact page of
where whoever was reading from? There are always
treasures from the past that give us food for thought
and this gem of a family bible is certainly one of them.
Thank you for adding this one my friend and also, I do
hope that you enjoyed your Puy Lentils with Tomatoes,
Basil and Mozzarella, and yes I did recognise the little
tomatoes from your earlier posting, well I figured that
these were of the same? 🙂 Have a fun evening and I
hope that my comment is not too lengthy 🙂

I used to be a teacher of English but when I set up this blog I made a spelling error and didn’t notice for a few days! When I tried to correct it, I found that that name was someone else’s so am stuck with mybeautfulthings and now I like it! It’s a bit off centre and it makes people smile! So you were right first time. 🙂

I’m happy to have such long comments from you! I, too, wonder about the red marker. I must read the two pages and see if it hints at anything. It could of course be simply a book mark as you say. I love your comments that it could stay with me. I’ve been trying to think of how to say that to M! I have kept it up-to-date with all births, deaths etc and don’t know if he will ……..

Yes, those beautiful little tomatoes have nearly all been eaten!

We’ve watched The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo tonight -a fabulous read and, happily, the film was very true to the book.

Hope you’ve had a good evening too 🙂

Yes I do think that you should try and keep the family bible with you, it is with family and that is all that matters in my way of thinking 🙂

I have heard of that book and film but have not seen it, perhaps I should try that one sometime instead of watching all the horror fims 🙂

Have a very nice Thursday 🙂

I agree! it is a real treasure and I shall be very sad to see it go. I’ve been keeping it up to date (though I didn’t show all the up-to-date ones) and I’m not sure that my brother will……. 🙂

Such a beautiful Family Bible! We have one, too. My oldest Aunt currently has it, but I remember looking through it all the time when I was little and living with my grandmother. We’d shove all sorts of stuff in there.. newspaper clippings, birth announcements, obituaries, anything we deemed important.
