Sanskrit Text, Silver Spoon and Leaves

1    Reading LouAnn’s blog about making resolutions for the New Year, I was reminded of this beautiful Sanskrit text which I found some 35 years ago when one of our twins was desperately ill and needing the first of three operations on his heart (coarctation of the aorta)    These words helped me get the best out of each day with him to make good memories of that very difficult time. He survived! He’s the D who was married in Senegal last April!

Look to this day
for it is life
the very life of life.
In its brief course lie all
the realities and truths of existence
the joy of growth
the splendour of action
the glory of power.
For yesterday is but a memory
And tomorrow is only a vision.
But today well lived
makes every yesterday a memory
of happiness
and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day….

It is still my philosophy today.

2   Grand-baby T needed cough medicine when she was here and I searched out the silver spoon we were always given medicine with. She wasn’t impressed!  The back of the spoon is marked ‘Practical Kiddicraft’

3   Down the lane were these leaves. I love the contrast of the bright green new ones with the bronze of the old ones.

and something not at all beautiful but which I feel very strongly about and in her blog,  Anjig, of knitreadclick, not normally a political blog, examines the whole issue of the safety of women in India. Do go across and read. It’s not an easy read but a very important issue.

Jools Holland, Bird Watching and Walking in the Woods

Usually all my beautiful things are from the day on which I post but we’ve just had a wonderful weekend away so today’s post covers Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

1   We had a trip up to Plymouth to see the amazing Jools Holland who just raises the spirits of all who are near him! He is so talented, so generous and clearly enjoys making so many people happy. He smiles his way through the whole performance! It was just fabulous to be able to watch his hands on the big screen. To my delight K T Tunstall was his surprise guest. His drummer, Gilson Lavis was just brilliant! We spent the night in a hotel and next day …….

2   We met two of our lovely daughters, M and L, for lunch in a country pub and then went home with L to her new home where the bird life is just amazing. It was very hard to get photos as they were all so busy going back and forth. There were Nuthatches, Blue tits, Willow tits, Great tits, Coal tits, Robins, Siskin, Chaffinches, Bullfinches, Pheasants and Jays.

3   A walk in the nearby woods this morning with L and T and T’s parents and their five Black Labradors was an utter delight.

Beautiful Message, Puy Lentils and The Family Bible

1  I received a beautiful message from Ammar this morning that has set me up for the day.  He was saying thank you for the lovely time we all spent together last week

2   I made the simplest and one of the most tasty lunches today – Puy Lentils with Tomatoes, Basil and Mozzarella and we ate it with a selection of leaves from our garden.

3    I had an email from my brother today about our reunion in July and asking if he could take The Family Bible back to Munich with him as it should be with him as he is the oldest of the four of us. That prompted me to go to it to have another look. A Family Bible has pages between the Old and New Testaments for the family to record Births, Marriages and Deaths so this is an invaluable family document. It was a present to my Great Grandmother on her marriage in 1885.  There is a red marker between Luke IX and X but unfortunately I don’t know its significance.

I am a Humanist, not a Christian, nevertheless I find this a most beautiful book. It contains some amazing historical coloured maps of biblical regions, which have changed dramatically over the last 128 years.

Have a look through the gallery below for lots of fascinating photos.
