Six on Saturday – Replanting and Spring Bulbs

We’ve started the work on the Suffragette Garden that needs an overhaul. The blind Narcissi in the first photo are now out and the ground ready for planting.

3. …… and the Hebes are in, ‘Baby Marie’  which will grow to 40 cms and I hope, in time, they will make a little hedge. The have white flowers but the buds are tinged with purple so will be perfect for this garden.

4.  I was given these bulbs for Christmas a few years ago but nothing happened and I had forgotten all about them. This year, here they are in the little wall garden and I don’t know what they are called. Help, anyone?

5.   The Narcissi are brightening up a dark corner. I’m hoping Storm Freya, which is on its way won’t beat them down.

6.   Now for something completely different!  It is St Piran’s Day here in Cornwall and our little town celebrates with a parade and hundreds of daffodils – in every shop window, in lapels, as decoration. It’s great fun!

Hailstones and Hearts

What a strange day for weather! One moment there was a crazy hail shower on my mac hood and then the next, the Spring sun welcomingly warm on my back. Some hailstones became caught in a spider’s web on my monkey planter.

It is St Piran’s Day tomorrow and the shops are decking themselves out for the occasion. Here is a daffodil heart in the florist’s window.

We bought a willow heart on Valentine’s Day from Trelissick  Art Gallery and it is sprouting.

St Piran’s Day, Falmouth and World Book Day

It is St Piran’s Day today, the National Day of Cornwall held on 5th March every year. The day is named after Saint Piran who is also the patron saint of tin miners. We had lunch in Falmouth after a wonderful singing session this morning and from The Pavillion Gardens could see the St Piran’s flag flying on Pendennis Castle.  St Piran’s day is also celebrated in California to honour the Cornish miners who participated in the area’s mining history beginning in the mid 19th century.

It is also World Book Day and many schools around the country invite the children to come to school dressed as a character from a book. I was asked this morning who I might dress as were I to be in school today. My first thought was Pippi Longstocking. I loved her stories as a child. For those who don’t know here Wikipaedia says “Nine-year-old Pippi is unconventional, assertive, and has superhuman strength, being able to lift her horse one-handed. She is playful and unpredictable. She frequently makes fun of unreasonable adult attitudes, especially when displayed by pompous and condescending adults. Pippi’s anger is reserved for the most extreme cases, such as when a man ill-treats her horse.” Suits me!
Which character would you dress up as?
