Poppy, Walk and Help?

05 Jul

Another Poppy is blooming. At breakfast time it popped out of its sepals and later in the day was fully open. As the sun left that part of the garden, it closed up again.

Our walk today was very blustery! Join us going up to the Flat Lode Trail with a view of Carn Brea, past the St Uny engine house and back home.

We have a problem in the edible trough. A little Viola plant died last week, just went limp and gave up the ghost. Yesterday, all was well with the rest of the Viola border and today – another plant seems to have died. Any ideas? The trough is damp, everything else, lettuces and the rest of the Violas seem fine…….

Vine weevil? They attack the roots.

I think they may be cutworms as the thing I found was exactly as lisinasturias described, c shaped caterpillar. I’ll look up about vine weevils too, just in case. Thank you. 🙂

        Mmm… I don’t know anything about cutworms.

Gorgeous poppy and a lovely walk! Very sad about the violas, I’m just taking a pop at it but could it be cutworms? We have exactly the same thing happen here, often with young French bean plants ~ digging underneath the affected plants we find the little culprits, like c-shaped caterpillars. So glad the rest of your plants are fine, they are so beautiful.

You are right! I’ve just been out and found one just under the plant. It is now no more but who knows how many others there might be?! I’ve just read that making pepper spray is the thing so I have just prepared that for tomorrow’s onslaught. Thank you so much for this timely and very swift response. 🙂

You’re welcome! They are such a nuisance, I hope the pepper spray works. Fingers crossed! 🙂

The plant seems to be not quite dead! There are green shoots since I squashed one curly cut worm and dowsed the area with pepper spray! Thank you for your help. 🙂
