Goldfinches, Mermaid and Pink Bud

There are so many Goldfinches in the garden at the moment that they have to take their turn at the feeders. While they wait, they pick up bits from the grass.

We love our little Mermaid by Carol Buller, a local artist, singer and friend.

These beautiful pink buds hold lovely purple flowers, part of my Suffragette border where all the plants are purple, white or green.

Sadly, I have mislaid the label and cannot remember the name. Help anyone?

Squirrel, Pin Cushion and Hahai-i

A very fluffy tailed squirrel has found our bird feeder.

The other day I bought some new glass topped sewing pins and today I added them to my Mum’s collection in the beautiful patchwork pin cushion that she made. You can see her tiny hand sewn stitches

When we were in Arizona I was given the very special present of a Kachina. This one is called Hahai-i, the Grandmother Kachina, and was a precious present from one Grandmother to another. “The Hopi doll carvers make her effigy in the flat form to be the first present that a baby receives.” From Hopi Kachinas by Barton Wright, a complementary present given at the same time. “Kachinas are the spirit essence of everything in the real world,” and they have truly caught my imagination. My Hahai-I already has companions which we bought in Phoenix at the Heard museum shop. I’ll tell you about those two soon.

Fungi, Turning Leaves and Honeysuckle

Our walk up the lane from town today had lots of beautiful things among them some remarkable white shiny fungi with the delicacy of porcelain. We are hoping T might identify them for us.

Three lovely old trees on the lane had to be cut down a couple of years ago as they were diseased but in their place our council planted three very pretty youngsters whose leaves are turning beautiful shades of red.
There is Honeysuckle still in flower in the hedgerow.

Thistle, St Ives and Smiles

I love the delicacy of this white thistle.

The beauty of St Ives never fails to move me. We were there tonight for a meeting about the very worrying changes to our beloved NHS.

It is International Smiles Day!

Lichens and Other Loveliness

Our hike today was along the Widforss Trail, again through woodland to spectacular views.

Tomorrow we leave The Grand Canyon for Tuba City, an overnight  stop as we go to Sedona, calling in on an old friend in Flagstaff whom we haven’t seen for 35 years! Happy dayside!

From Monumental to Minute

Another wonderfully exhausting day! We hiked out to Cape Final through Ponderosa forests and high up some boulders to almost 8,000 feet!  I kept thinking, Mr Regan would be so pleased to know what good use I am getting out of the beautiful new hips he gave me!

On the way out we saw a family of Mule deer, on the way back a Coyote crossed the road ahead of us and while in the woods we saw all manner of birds, flowers, cacti and little creatures! Enjoy some of them with us. By the way, last night’s sunset was glorious.

This is the plaque set into the rocks at the top of the above boulders.

I loved the colours here, beside us as we had lunch overlooking the canyon.

Some kind of a cricket we think given the way he jumped and sounded.

And  lastly , the coyote.

Love, Pansies, Lettuces and Begonias

I like the sentiment in this.

We have salads, herbs and edible flowers in our trough.

Our Begonias are quite stunning. I love the blue of the Lobelia beginning to show through.

Geranium, Vapour Trails and A Poem

Our white Geranium has some rogue petals that I like a lot.

The lovely Mr S noticed some interesting vapour trails in the sky this morning.

This poem pleases me. I hope you like it too. I find it quite delicious!

 Pretty Words by Elinor Morton Wylie

Poets make pets of pretty, docile words:

I love smooth words, like gold-enamelled fish

Which circle slowly with a silken swish,

And tender ones, like downy-feathered birds:

Words shy and dappled, deep-eyed deer in herds,

Come to my hand, and playful if I wish,

Or purring softly at a silver dish,

Blue Persian kittens fed on cream and curds.

I love bright words, words up and singing early;

Words that are luminous in the dark, and sing;

Warm lazy words, white cattle under trees;

I love words opalescent, cool, and pearly,

Like midsummer moths, and honied words like bees,

Gilded and sticky, with a little sting.

Walk By Gyllyngvase Beach

A bit of deja vu today as our walk was along Cliff Road, Gyllyngvase, Falmouth with me using just one crutch. My knee is still swollen and I am black, blue, pink, yellow and purple from ankle to thigh but was reassured after a three hour visit to our wonderful Minor Injuries Clinic at Barncoose Hospital and an X-ray yesterday that it is ‘just’ soft tissue damage that might take weeks (!) to heal but is not a serious injury. Rest and exercise in equal measure should do the trick.

Here are a Bramble flower, the promise of a Blackberry later in the season, a seal out in the bay and some seaweed in the clear blue water with views across the bay – for some reason in reverse order. What beauty!

Spider Crab, Bunch of Flowers and Friendship

While I was picking a bunch of flowers for a lovely friend whose birthday is tomorrow, I noticed a white and pink spider on the white and pink lupins. I took my photos and then identified it as a Crab Spider. Its legs are certainly very crab like. I have never seen one like it before.

Flowers for our beautiful friend which we delivered, along with some freshly made Strawberry Freezer Jam, this afternoon.
Despite our shared shock and sadness at the referendum result, we all found some smiles. Thank you N, G, T and K.

Thanks here too to J and M, also helping me find important things this last week.
