Christmas Day Walk, Christmas Swimmers and Love

It has been a family tradition to go for a walk on the beach on Christmas Day, whatever the weather, since we first came to live in Cornwall when I was six years old. Yesterday, the sun shone and it was glorious! We were almost alone, with just a few dog walkers, walking on Porthtowan beach and heading, at the turn of the tide, towards Wheal Coates up on the cliffs.

As we turned to return, only the sound of the waves and the odd excited dog barking to be heard, we were astounded to see a hundred or more people had arrived while we were strolling. Then, all the more astonished to see them all race into the winter sea!

The following video is a bit shaky – I was cold!

Pansy Surprise, A Visit and Generosity

Last night, as the lovely Mr S was locking up, he found a bag on the doorstep. I contained a very pretty purple and white Pansy plant in a container. There was no message or card but it has to be from someone who knows me well, the colours being the Suffragette colours. If you read this, lovely friend, please give me a call!

2    Daughter No 3 is in Devon for a couple of days so came down for lunch today. What a delight to have them here, if only for a couple of hours!  Littlest Live-wire is so full of language and stories, questions and make-believe. The garden, as always, found her exploring.

3   A young friend has been the instigator of a Charity project to collect items for the refugees in Calais – Falmouth’s Donation Day Drop-off for Calais. We went over this afternoon with our contribution to find J and her friend almost overwhelmed by the fabulous generosity of the people in Falmouth and around. People had been arriving all day with tins and packets of food as well as warm coats, hats and scarves for the increasingly cold weather and many other items. Volunteers have been helping to sort and pack things into boxes and it just shows how lovely so many people are. I am a great believer in the fact that he humanity of humans will always shine through.

My Dad, Generosity and Kaffir Lily

1  It is ten years today since my lovely Dad died and, of course, he still leaves a hole in my life. This morning in our newspaper was a lovely piece by Lindy West about losing her Dad three years ago. I found it heart warming. Click on the red link to read it.

2   In the midst of some horrific news this week comes a beautiful reminder on the inherent goodness and humanity of people. I loved this story of a student in Preston who slept rough herself to repay a homeless man’s kindness to her. Another heart-warming story for you.

3   We have some colour in the garden as the Kaffir Lilies begin their winter show.
