Tangerine Bird Treats, More Raindrops and Elf Coats – and My Staircase of Books

1   Inspired by something I read on a blog this morning http://enjoyingcreating.wordpress.com/ I got some half-dead fruit out of the compost and made these bird food treats to hang on our Christmas tree – which will be ‘planted’ outside as soon as it stops raining! I also made a pastry bird-seed cake in the hope  of both nourishing the birds and luring them closer to my camera!

2    I do love macro raindrops on this tiny moss.

3    These Avalon Elf Coats are the most beautiful bits of clothing I’ve ever come across!

4    And, at last, I have my book list for the staircase of books (but as my big brother said, it could be a different list tomorrow!)  I agree with Valerie that really I need the staircase in a lighthouse!

‘Under Milk Wood’  Dylan Thomas

Poems of Pablo Neruda

‘Othello’ Shakespeare (How can I choose just one play? Perhaps I should have ‘The Complete Works’ )

‘The Book Thief’  Marcus Zusak

‘Far From The Madding Crowd’  Thomas Hardy

‘Jeremy Visick’  David Wiseman  (my Dad!)

‘Kes’  Barry Hines

‘Sophie’s Choice’  William Stryron

‘Winnie-the-Pooh’  A A Milne

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’  Harper Lee

‘Rebecca’  Daphne Du Maurier

Do let me know what your choices would be and thank you to those who already have.

And to all my Australian readers – I hope you and yours are safe as we hear the news of the terrible fires sweeping across your country.

A Jay, Truro and Chocolate Amaretti Souffles

1  A beautiful single Jay turned up on the feeding table this morning, ate seeds, tried the pastry, had some oats and swept off into the fields behind.

2  We had a day out in Truro for Mr S’s birthday – galleries, lunch, shopping and  ‘The Descendants’ in the afternoon followed by ….

3  …A  roast duck dinner and a new recipe that I’ve been waiting to try out for ages – Chocolate Amaretti Souffles. They were absolutely gorgeous, crisp on top and truly gooey in the middle. Thank you, Nigel Slater!

Cheeky Squirrel, Horses and Apple Mincemeat Crumble (and recipe for the scones)

1  We thought we might keep the pigeons and squirrels out by upturning a hanging basket over the bird food and clipping it down but, no!

Squirrel after the bird seed

2  The horses have returned to the field behind our house! I couldn’t take a photo as it has been Cornish misting all day but it’s such a pleasure to have them back.

3  We hardly ever do puddings these days but the weather was so grey and mizzly, comfort food was required. Some mincemeat left over from Christmas, a couple of cooking apples and come oaty crumble mix from the freezer and, in no time, a delicious pud for the eating!

and just for today……

4  I’ve had a couple of people ask for the recipe for the Marmite Scones. Here it is. The recipe says to make 8 but they must be huge! I pat them a bit thinner and make about 20 small ones. Just remembered, I didn’t have any plain yogurt in so I used Vanilla! Your choice. Enjoy!
