Minerals, Primroses and Memories

Before we went upstairs to see the Cornish Myths and Legends exhibition last Monday, we went into the recently updated minerals gallery and it was breath-taking. Here are just  two of the lovely pieces that caught my eye.

I love Primroses – I think I may have mentioned that before.

I took a phone call today from the daughter of a lovely old friend, Edna, and heard that she had died on Tuesday.  We first met many years ago when my lovely Mr S was a student teacher and her husband, John, was his history lecturer. Edna and I became friends as we canvassed for the Labour party together and I baby-sat for their two children. Edna was always kind and funny, interested in life and happy to share ideas.
Their parties were great fun and the food always delicious. Her recipe for an amazing Chocolate Malakoff became a family favourite for special occasions. I must make it again soon and share the recipe with you, dear Reader.
We lost touch for some years and then Edna read one of my letters in The Guardian and tracked me down. We have stayed close ever since, sharing political ideas and favourite commentators, Heather Cox Richardson writing about American politics in particular. Edna loved my blog and often commented which was really lovely. She was much loved and will be much missed.

Posy, Signs and Sunset

We visited friends for a lovely catch-up this morning and took a little garden posy of beautifully scented Viburnum, some Summer Snowflake (Leucojum aestivum), Muscari and Forget-me-nots.

There are some very smart new street signs in town.

It being the vernal equinox and another sunny day we went to watch the sunset.  It wasn’t especially spectacular but it was lovely to be out on the cliffs in the evening sunshine. The gorse was particularly golden in the early evening light.

Automata, Blue Sky and A Song

Playing with automata yesterday was great fun, such intricate work.

What a glorious blue sky today. This weather vane is at Burncoose Nursery where I called in after singing to see the magnolia blooms  (nearly over) and the rhododendrons.

A good friend sent me a video of us singing this morning., Pachabel’s Canon. This is one of my favourites and one I brought to choir 13 years ago after we went to WOMAD and I learned this piece there at a workshop. I love all the parts and start with the basses, moving round all the parts and coming back to the tenors to finish. If you watch carefully , you can watch my progress!

Clay, Sewing and Solidarity

I’ve done a bit more work on next door’s project, sewing the little clay creatures onto long strands of coloured fabric while Sue worked on the head. I thoroughly enjoyed my self. The opening night will be March 31st at Truro Museum and Art Gallery.

It’s only a few weeks since I shared the song, “Hold On’ which we sang in solidarity with the people  of Minneapolis. Life is still very difficult for them and we sang again for them today.

Shop Window, Clay and Tulips

I may have been at this workshop if I hadnt already made plans to be creative this afternoon.

Yesterday I helped make some little clay creatures for a new project being created by my lovely neighbour and today I coloured the ones that were dry enough,  ready for tomorrow.

All our lovely white tulips are now blooming.

International Women’s Day, A Photo and A Posy

A day to celebrate all the wonderful women in my life, sisters, daughters and friends, those still with us and those who have been very special influences in my life – my Suffragette Great Granny, my Spanish Granny, my Mum and my dear friends Kath and Angie in whose memories I write this blog. To learn more about either of these much missed women,  put their name in the search bar.

My Granny and my Mum

It’s the 8th anniversary of our lovely neighbours’ wedding and every year I take a small posy round in memory of Dear Bill-next-door, a posy like the ones I made for their wedding when my lovely Mr S and I were witnesses.  I was delighted to find rich blues in the garden this year which Bill would have loved, the colour of the Underworld…

Cornish Lane, Mylor and Daffodils

We went to Mylor this morning to meet friends for a catch up and a delicious breakfast. The ancient trees along the way, the views and the dozens of daffodils along the way are all in the gallery. Click on any photo for a bigger view.

Sewing, The AGM and Reading

I’ve been curtain making today using some wonderful vintage Laura Ashley fabric from 1983.  It’s fabric which we used for kitchen curtains in our penultimate home before moving back to Cornwall so it is full of lovely memories of our children growing up, family dinners and birthday teas in that kitchen. I’ll show the curtain in place when it’s hung..

This evening was the AGM for Community Roots which was full of information of what we have all achieved and what we will be aiming for over the next year. One of our directors is leaving and we were all asked to give one word to describe her. As you can see, she is much loved and will be greatly missed. She is the essence of Roots.

I spent the afternoon reading the latest book from The ShelterBox book Club. It’s both harrowing and full of love and hope. I’ll tell you more when I’ve finished it.

Crocuses, Tomatoes and Ukraine

My Suffragette garden is coming into bloom, purple, white and green crocus plants.

You may remember that last week we sowed many trays of tomatoes of various sorts. Today they were up and ready for transplanting and I was so busy doing that I forgot to take any photos.  The following photo of Gardeners’ Ecstasy is from the internet, not mine!

We send our love to our friends in Ukraine as the war reaches a 4th anniversary. We remember with great fondness the friends we made among the Hooligan Art Community. Here are some photos from 2023 when they were visiting.

Slava Ukraine!

Singing, Reunion and A Beach

After a lovely sing this morning, I drove to Porth near Newquay to meet with a young colleague whom I haven’t seen for maybe 30 years! It was a delight to hear all about those years and even to feel a sense of pride in her success as a prize winning podcaster. Do have a listen to Weird in the Wade especially if you are interested in history and the slightly spooky.  .  N is on holiday here so it was lovely to catch up and have a very windy walk on the beach together. I enjoyed the evidence of youngsters playing in the sand.

Here we are singing. https://www.facebook.com/reel/25793568737001908
