Afternoon Tea, Birthday Cake and Viburnum

Along with the rest of the gang at Community Roots, we were invited to the 80th birthday party of one of our volunteers. It was a delightful occasion with a very delicious spread and the most amazing cake!

Eric’s wonderful cake showing all his interests especially his participation at Community Roots where his inventions are legendary. Look for the carrots and cabbages too. There is also a fabulous family tree.

Outside the venue were lots of Viburnum bushes.

Pin Cushion, Baking and A Song

I’ve been working on the new curtain today. It always pleases me to use my Mum’s patchwork pin cushion. Look carefully, you can see herĀ  tiny hand stitches.

This afternoon I made our favourite cheesecake and made it into individual servings. You may know the delicious puds you can buy in individual dishes…..I’ve been collecting the little glass pots and today made a dozen cheese cakes. We ate two to test them! .

I used this recipe.

And a song, a most important song, from Bruce Springsteen.

Share Your World and Framing

Trying something a bit different today as the insistent rain makes photos all but impossible. Reading Ladysighs blog today put me on to Pensivity Share Your World so I thought I would answer the four questions ….

1.Ā  Would you consider yourself easy going?
I do, I don’t take offence easily and like to get along with everyone. I assume people are lovely until they prove otherwise.
2.Ā  Are you comfortable talking to a group of strangers at a social gathering?
That all depends on what the social gathering is.
3.Ā  What are three things about people that annoy you?
People who lie, those who don’t listen and above all those who are not kind.
4.Ā  What do you do to cheer yourself up when you’re feeling down in the dumps?
I sing!

I sang this morning and after coffee with the gang, we took two paintings bought last year to a lovely young framer to work his magic.

We bought the top two by Roy Callow and they are now with The Framer in Penryn.

Cathedral, Project and Supper

Here’s a different view of Truro Cathedral, taken from the window of the coffee shop where we had excellent coffee and a toasted tea-cake. I was pleased to catch the gull in my photo just before it took off. Just look at that lovely blue sky as we are between storms, another due tomorrow. .

I love a new project! Today we bought the fabric for the curtain to go over the new back door.

We had a delicious veggie chilli for supper tonight with sour cream, guacamole and cheese.

Flowers, A Card and Baking

In a shop doorway in Hayle yesterday were these brightly coloured Primulas. I didn’t buy any but I did get a pot of 3 hyacinths that will smell amazing when they open.

Inside the shop, which was an Aladdin’s cave, was this card which reminded me of my Dear Friend and colleague Angie with whom I spent many happy hours after work on Friday evenings sharing some wine before the weekend. We had such happy times together and I miss her.

I made a Chicken and Mushroom pie for dinner tonight and with the leftover pastry, I made some scrumptious cheese straws. They didn’t last long!

Window, Window Box and Amaryllis

Window spotted in Hayle

Window bow seen in Hayle

We are amazed at the growth of our Ammaryllis.

See how tall it is!

Bud getting colour

A second bud has appeared

Regular readers may be surprised to see my birthday cards still up. We have a family tradition. My cards stay up for a month to be replaced by those for my lovely Mr S on February 1st. Those cards always stayed up until the beginning of March which is our eldest daughter’s birthday.

Spring Flowers Appearing

It was so lovely today toĀ  take a walk around the garden between showers and wearing wellies and to spot some signs of Spring. Some flowers were quite rain damaged but here are some Snowdrops and two kinds of Crocus.

Carnations, Seeds and Snollygoster

There are just a couple of white roses and two beautiful carnations left from the bouquet the family gave me on my birthday over three weeks ago. .

Our gardening magazine arrived with a free packet of seeds. They suggest we plant them along with Cosmos which I love so we’ll try that. Watch this space in the summer!

Regular readers will know that I love words and here’s one I found today in a wonderful book, The Horologicon by Mark Forsyth, snollygoster. The O.E.D. defines snollygoster asĀ  ‘A shrewd, unprincipled person, esp a politician.’ It was defined in the 1890s by an American journalist thus:

I just love the phrase ‘Monumental talknophical assumnacy!”Ā  Ā A number of people come to mind!

I was just checking which words I have used before from Mark Forsyth’s book and came across a post from 2012 which has lots of photos of my knitting of that year! I was amazed to see everything I’d created in those 12 months! https://mybeautfulthings.com/2013/01/04/weekly-photo-challenge-my-2012-in-pictures-a-year-of-knitting/

Flowers, Cathedral and A Special Poem

In Truro today, it was lovely to see the planters full of primulas in purple, white and green – and a bit of pink.

I’ve been given permission to share a poem with you. It is one of a booklet of remarkable writing produced by a very talented grandchild of one of my choir friends.

Mist, Reflections and A Poem

Driving from Truro to Penryn this morning, the mist was sitting in the valleys.

I love reflections of boats in the river..

I am the Song by Charles Causley is a long time favourite.
