Desiderata, Clematis and A Web

I am preparing for a Humanist Wedding ceremony this coming Saturday and as I started work this morning, a message came in from two of my colleagues who did a Wedding last weekend (no, not that one!) where  Desiderata was one of the readings. I was reminded of how special it is.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Our Nelly Moser Clematis has its first flower and something is eating the petals!

I was sitting enjoying the sunshine when I noticed this circular web and wondered what creature may be responsible.

Who made this very neat web in the wall?

Poppy, Shady Patch and Clematis

Our Meconopsis Poppy is about to open.

Meconopsis

We have just finished planting our shady patch and I am delighted with it with the fountain in the middle surrounded by various ferns (including a little Tree Fern),  Bluebells and Violets and the Meconopsis which opened during the day.

Copper Beech, Stile and A Cornish Lane

Next door’s Copper Beech is glorious!

Copper Beech leaves against a very blue sky

We visited another Open Studio today, not over the stile, just down the lane and we bought a beautiful small painting. It has to stay in situ until the Open studios event is over so I will show you when we bring it home.

Stone stile

Our Cornish lanes have the most beautiful hedgerows at the moment – Pink Campion, Bluebells, Cow Parsley (which my SIL calls Queen Anne’s  Lace, a much prettier name) and greenery and all under a blue, blue sky.

Colourful Walk, A Companion and Crowan

After working in the garden all morning, there were still some holes so off we went to Burncoose Nursery to find some more plants! Their garden is just amazing, filled with Rhododenrons. Bluebells and life – just glorious! The nursery dog came with us as we strolled about the garden. When we left, he waited again at the gate for the next people to show around.

This coming week is Open Studios throughout Cornwall and today we made our first couple of visits, first to our lovely friend who makes very beautiful pots. We parked just by the Church, St. Crewenna .

Tomorrow I will show you a treasure we found at the next studio in the village…..

Suffragette Songs, A View and A Marmalade Cat

We were practising Ethel Smythe’s Suffragette anthem, “March of the Women” this morning and Claire had moved on from our part to the sopranos so I went on to the balcony to take photos of our beautiful view. (See below.) Just under the balcony were pots of purple flowers in small green planters, serendipitously the colours of the Suffragettes, purple, white and green.

Purple, white and green

The view, as always, was stunning.

This afternoon, the lovely Mr S and I went to the garden centre to try to find some Runner Bean plants. This beautiful Marmalade Cat was lounging on the counter reminding me of Orlando, the Marmalade Cat, a delightful story book from my childhood and written by Kathleen Hale,  Anyone else remember Orlando?

Planting, Heritage Carrots and An Owl

We have been planting again – some tiny carrot seedlings in the veg trough.

Tiny carrot plants

This is what our carrots should look like in due course.

Colourful carrots

My other purchase when away was an owl to add to my collection. The Wise Owl was our family symbol as our family name was Wiseman and between us, we have many. I love its quirky expression and its laughter lines!

Angels, Earrings and A Pot

I bought some beautiful items while in KwaZulu Natal. I always try to find an Angel for our Christmas tree when we are on holiday and found two pretty beaded ones on a market run by a collective so each maker was selling her own creations.

Market Angels

I found earrings in each of the museums we visited, again, each was labelled with the maker’s name though the name labels were taken off so that each maker was properly rewarded for their own work.

Earrings from three different places and makers – The outside ones were from the Talana Museum shop and the middle pair were from the Rorke’s drift museum shop.

After watching the women at work weaving, we bought two of these pretty little pots  – one for us and one for our lovely neighbour who has kindly watched over our place and kept our house plants alive.

Sounds, Planting and Last Narcissi

I can’t show you a photo for my first beautiful thing tonight.  I just want to share the sounds as we sat in the sunshine having a cup of tea this afternoon. The dominant sound was the baaing of the sheep in the field behind (see a couple of days ago for a photo of the lambs) closely followed by the gentle buzzing of insects seeking out the pollen and interrupted occasionally by the crying of seagulls. What a joy. We are so lucky to live where we do.

The lovely Mr S has planted lots of Cosmos this evening as I was out singing.  We have long loved Cosmos, especially the white ones, and were delighted to find them growing so profusely  alongside the roads in South Africa. Now, I will love them even more, even the pink ones!

Cosmos

We have moved the finished pots of tulips and daffodils to a space at the back for their leaves to die down and will plant up other pots to replace them on the steps. I cut the last few Narcissi to enjoy them indoors.

Singing, Harbour and Purple Flowers

It was good to be home in time for this afternoon’s concert with The Suitcase Singers and such fun to be singing in harmony with lovely people again. The audience were very appreciative, we raised a good amount for our two charities  and we all enjoyed our Cornish cream tea after singing.

We were overlooking the harbour from the venue and I spotted our boat despite her being without her dodgers which show her name. She, Skippalong, is in the middle of the photo.

Walking home I passed this glorious blooming Aubretia.

Spring Lambs, Bluebells and Clematis

Spring has sprung while we have been away!  The trees’ leaves are that beautiful fresh green, the Bluebells are truly blue and in every hedgerow as well as our garden and, almost best of all,  we have lambs in the back field. What a treat!
