Jamestown, Yorktown and The Hound’s Tale 2

Yesterday was a day of history, discovering how the early settlers lived. The ships they made the long and dangerous journey in were so small!

After the museum we drove the road alongside the James River to Yorktown.

We met two young skateboarders in Yorktown who just wanted to talk to us to hear our Enflish accents!

We went back to The Hound’s Tale for our supper as we enjoyed it so much last night. The owner Don, spent some time with us again which was lovely and our food was delicious. I had scallops with cauliflower purée and asparagus while the lovely Mr S had duck with spätzle and a very delicious sauce. We loved the quirky dog ‘portraits’ and the doggy footprints on the pavement outside leading customers in to the bar, modelled on an English pub.

Williamsburg to Washington

That was some drive! Thank goodness for good maps and the grid system! The B&B in Williamsburg had a raised bed vegetable garden, not unlike ours at home ( wondering how ours is doing….).

We followed a Master Gardener for a while on our way. I love how American number plates can be so personalised.

We are now settled in our hotel and planning the next couple of car free days.

Monticello, Virginia and Williamsburg

We left Shenandoah driving in rain down the Skyline Dive and stopped to visit Monticello, the home of the amazing Thomas Jefferson in lovely sunshine. Our guide was brilliant giving us all sorts of fascinating information and the gardens were charming too. We stopped by the graveyard where he is buried and I was taken by the pair of memorial stones below.

Virginia is the state for lovers!

Williamsburg in the evening was alive with buskers and blooming with flower beds. We ate in a pub called The Hound’s Tale and met the very friendly owner.

Shenandoah, Waterfalls and Wild Flowers

I am feeling pretty pleased with myself! We did a really difficult walk today down a gorge to see waterfalls and I coped really well thanks to Mr Regan, the wonderful surgeon who gave me two new hips. It took us almost three hours and after that we did a very short walk to an overlook where I stood on top of the world. There were lots of wild flowers including tiny violets, tall Goldenrod, little wild strawberry plants and what we think is a Pink Slipper Orchid.

Breakfast, Frontier Culture Museum and Sunset

Turning off the I81 to travel on happier roads we came across a small roadside cafe with lots of cars parked outside. We went in for breakfast as many Americans do and found it full of families meeting for breakfast as it is Mother’s Day here in USA. I had a Bacon biscuit and it was delicious. I took half away in a box for my lunch!

En route we stopped at the Frontier Culture Museum which was fascinating having houses from 1820 and 1850 among several others that had been moved to the site from Pensylvania. There was a most knowledgeable volunteer guide there. The following loom is a ribbon loom, just table top size and it captured my interest. I liked the old dresser and kitchen tools too. The woodwork on the side of the house fascinated Mr S.

Floyd Market and The Appalachian Way

Last night we were at the Jamboree in Floyd. Tonight as I write this we are there again in spirit as we listen to the live streaming of tonight’s event and it is great fun. We have driven up to Roanoke and headed out on the Appalachian Trail for just an hour. Here is a taster of today.

This talented young man played Major Tom and was brilliant.

Floyd and The Friday Jamboree

A quiet morning was followed by a walk by the river ( tadpoles), a stroll around town ( the coffee shop and the Green Man) and then just the most fun at First Friday’s Jamboree at Floyd Country Store. Just about everyone joined in the dancing to the Appalachian string bands, including us!

Weekly Photo Challenge – Admiration

What a beautiful piece of work this is. It shows the names of the Great Grandmother, Aunts and Uncles of the lovely person we met last night at her B&B,  River House in Grassy Creek, North Carolina. I so admire anyone who works with such skill, love and dedication.
