Colander, Light and Rooks

To see the partial eclipse this evening, we went up to Copper Lane behind us, looking out to St Agnes and the sea and caught it in the holes of a colander! The light went to dusk for a while, a strange, eerie light with sunset still two hours away. The rooks went crazy, cawing and flying into the rookery but came out again only a few minutes later when it all got brighter again.

Hunter’s Moon, Planting and Soul Cakes

There was a full moon last night, the Hunter’s Moon, and as I said yesterday, the sky was full of clouds. Later, though, they cleared for a short time and I managed to get photos and of the partial eclipse so I went to bed happy!

When there are extra baby plants at Roots, volunteers are invited to give them a home. Today, in our edibles trough, I planted lots of over wintering lettuces and hope they will survive. At Roots they are planted in poly tunnels. Here they will just have plastic cloches over them so we shall see.

We have been invited to a Celebration of Samhain next Tuesday, 31st October, Hallowe’en so I looked up what is traditionally eaten at Samhain and found Soul Cakes. Today I have made some. They taste good but seem rather heavy……  We’ll see how they go down on Tuesday evening around the fire!

Happiness, Horses and Eclipse

What a magical start to the International Day of Happiness!

We and our neighbours went out to watch the partial eclipse of the sun and it was just amazing. The horses were intrigued by what was going on and we felt so lucky that the clouds and the haze had cleared and gave us such an experience. B&S had x-ray film and we had a pin-hole piece of card, a colander and a sheet of white paper as advised last night by the lovely Professor Brian Cox and Dara O’Briain on Stargazing Live last night. Buzz Aldrin was with them and was a delight to listen to. Alex Autin, this post is for you. I wonder if you will be able to find the programme on BBC2.
