Jacket, Soup Night and A Squirrel

I’ve had my Granny’s jacket for many years, wore it quite a lot but I haven’t worn it for a long time and decided it needed a new home so I took it down to Make A Mends for them to make use of it. Sarah fell in love with it so it is now hers and it really suits her.  My Granny was Hilda Richards and she would be delighted that it is still being loved and worn.

We’ve been to Redruth Soup Night, great fun and for a good cause so win win all round. After the soup I had the most delicious Lemon Posset.

On the wall is another of Redruth’s red squirrels. Sadly, I don’t know the artist but I will find out.

Water, Plastic Squirrel and Postbox Topper

Today is another special day –  World Water Day – an annual United Nations observance day held on 22 March that highlights the importance of fresh water. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.  When I was teaching GCSE English some years ago, the following poem came up on the syllabus. I loved it then and thought it just the right poem for today.

Blessing by Imtiaz Dharker

The skin cracks like a pod.
There never is enough water.

Imagine the drip of it,
the small splash, echo
in a  tin mug,
the voice of a kindly god.

Sometimes, the sudden rush
of fortune. The municipal pipe bursts,
silver crashes to the ground
and the flow has found
a roar of tongues. From the huts,
a congregation: every man woman
child for streets around
butts in, with pots,
brass, copper, aluminium,
plastic buckets,
frantic hands,

and naked children
screaming in the liquid sun,
their highlights polished to perfection,
flashing light,
as the blessing sings
over their small bones.

The water situation in Gaza makes me weep; indeed the whole situation in Gaza. I just wish life were better for those children and that they could feel ‘the blessing.’
For some reason that I haven’t yet fathomed, our town is celebrating the red squirrel. This delightful piece made by a local artist, Flotsam Flo, is in the window of our greengrocery and butcher’s shop.  If you use Facebook, do look her up. Her work is so important.
There’s a new postbox topper on our street, ready for Mother’s day next Sunday.

Narcissi, St Piran’s Festival and Happiness Calendar

Happy St David’s Day to all the Welsh and those with Welsh heritage like me and my siblings. I love Daffodils in all their guises so here they are to mark the day.

Before The Ingleheart Singers started the day off with a rousing  round of some of our Cornish repertoire, a choir friend took this photo of me with Max, our lovely Town Crier, in his wonderful Story Coat that regular readers will know all about. Check here if you’d like to know more.

Here is the Happiness Calendar for March on this, the first day of Spring.

Orange, Arrow and A Van

Sitting in the lovely Grow Box cafe at Krowji, having a cuppa with a good friend, I was taken with the occasional sunbeams highlighting the dried orange slices decorating the windows.

On the way out I noticed the feather that someone has put on the  arrow pointing the way to the cafe.

In the car park, while waiting for my lift (my lovely Beetle is in the garage), I watched some workmen loading thier van and liked the painting on the side.

Marmalade Cat, Daffodils and A Poem

When we visited friends yesterday we were delighted to meet with their beautiful cat again, grown and gorgeous. He reminds me of Orlando the Marmalade Cat whose stories entranced me as a child.Click here  to see him as a kitten.

I just love having Cornish daffodils in the house all the time in these cold, dark months.

We have a new gallery in town called 89 Redruth. We popped in at the weekend to see the new exhibition. We didn’t buy anything this time but near some lovely clay pieces was the following poem which I like very much. May you all, Dear Readers, have the ‘invisible cloak’ of love to keep you safe.

Valentine’s Day and A Poem

Happy Valentine’s Day, Galentine’s or Palentine’s – whatever floats your boat!

I have a couple of favourite love poems. Today I give you Carol Ann Duffy’s Valentine, one the teenagers in my English classes really took to.

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.

Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or a kissogram.

I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.

Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding ring,
if you like.
Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.

We have been out this evening to Home Ground’s Pizza night, a delicious meal, all handmade from fresh ingredients, in lovely cosy surroundings and a really lovely ambience.

Cornish Flag, River and Viaduct

An amusing take on the Cornish flag on the back of a car we followed today.

Wind ruffled water in the Penryn River this morning – big contrast with the glassy surface last week.

Blue skies above and under the viaduct arch in Redruth

Storms and Another New Word

We visited a new gallery in town today and I loved these words on the wall.

I think the author of these words may be O. A. Rice but I can find no further detail about them.

I fell in love with a painting too – it moved me in ways I don’t really understand. When we know where it’s going, I’ll show you a photo.

My SIL sent me the following word, new to me and, oh, so evocative of old bookshops and archive ares of libraries.

First Iris and Celebration

The first Iris Reticulata is blooming in the Three Wise Monkeys planter.

Tonight was the Official Opening of The Redruth Buttermarket and with many others we were invited for the evening which was very enjoyable.

Poster, Lamb and Cat

In town this morning, we noticed a delightful display with an advert for an exhibition coming soon.

Love this little wooly lamb in our favourite coffee shop.

Today’s cat was a picture we saw in the back windscreen of the car in front of us at the lights where the wiper is the cat’s tail. This made me smile.
