A Day of Cats

Hector the Station Cat was much loved by all travellers and there is now a planter in his memory. Click on the red link to see him at work.

I love this little plaque that was my Mum and Dad’s, then ours and now is in our daughter’s house.

Wilson, the Maine Coon kitten.

Primroses and The Best Music!

It is so lovely to see the primroses coming out in our front garden. They are my absolute favourites.

My brother, SIL and the lovely Mr S always say,”We had the best music!” and here is the proof.

A Poem for Community Roots and A Video

It was Volunteer Sunday today but we couldn’t go. We read this poem, The Glory of the Garden by Rudyard Kipling, with Ti on our last visit and so many lines seemed to fit the aims and philosophy of Community Roots. Here are the middle two verses.

And there you’ll see the gardeners, the men and ‘prentice boys
Told off to do as they are bid and do it without noise ;
For, except when seeds are planted and we shout to scare the birds,
The Glory of the Garden it abideth not in words.
And some can pot begonias and some can bud a rose,
And some are hardly fit to trust with anything that grows ;
But they can roll and trim the lawns and sift the sand and loam,
For the Glory of the Garden occupieth all who come.
Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing:—” Oh, how beautiful,” and sitting in the shade
While better men than we go out and start their working lives
At grubbing weeds from gravel—paths with broken dinner—knives.
There’s not a pair of legs so thin, there’s not a head so thick,
There’s not a hand so weak and white, nor yet a heart so sick
But it can find some needful job that’s crying to be done,
For the Glory of the Garden glorifieth every one.
And the Glory of the Garden it shall never pass away!
I hope you can follow the link to see the youngest volunteers at Roots.

Crocus, Cyclamen and A Poem

Some delightful crocuses, newly planted last Autumn, have started to appear. They are supposed to be fragrant so I’ll let you know as more appear and open up.

The white cyclamen please me greatly.

i just love the poem for today from my book, A Poet for Every Day of the Year. it is called “On the Birth of a Son”

On the Birth of a Son

TRANSLATED BY ARTHUR WALEY
Families when a child is born
Hope it will turn out intelligent.
I, through intelligence
Having wrecked my whole life,
Only hope that the baby will prove
Ignorant and stupid.
Then he’ll be happy all his days
And grow into a cabinet minister.

Man Down, Porthtowan Beach and Happiness Calendar

What a lovely day! First singing with the most beautiful backdrop of the Penryn River and the giving of our donation to one of the charities we have supported over the last 12 months, Man Down, a local charity looking after the mental health of young men.

Photo by Mandy Rolleston – thank you.

Our eldest daughter came for the day to celebrate the birthday mentioned yesterday. We had lunch out at the Blue Bar  in Porthtowan  and walked on the beach in the lovely apricity, watched the dogs playing and the surfers having fun. We cooked a delicious birthday dinner together.

It’s the first of the month so time for the Happiness Calendar. Happy Days to all my lovely readers.
