Sign, Poppies and A Poem

13 Jul

We pass this gateway on our walk and I wonder what the sign at the bottom of the left hand post means. Does anyone know?

I love the golden sunny faces of these Poppies – Eschscholzia californica, the California poppy, golden poppy, California sunlight or cup of gold – what lovely names!

I was reminded by a dear friend of this thoughtful poem this morning and thought I would share it again. I last shared it in 2014 – it’s kind of the rationale for my blog.

Leisure by William Henry Davies

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this is if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

I do love that poem! My aunt in Paris sent me an e-card today with that poem as the message! I think the universe is trying to tell us something…

That’s how the poem came to me too, yesterday morning from a friend. 🙂

The symbol is an Ordnance Survey benchmark.

I love this poem too and was also reminded of it this morning 😊 I also love the California poppies. I grow them every year and love how they open to the sun

We really want to get some of these poppies, they flower on and on and are so cheery. Local nurseries don’t seem to have them. 🙂

I order mine from Sarah Raven; I’ve bought seedlings and seeds and had success with both. Once planted, they self seed too!

Thank you! When lockdown happened, I ordered lots of plants from Sarah Raven and they have all been very successful so I will try her for the poppies too. 🙂
