Montpelier, Another Bridge, A Truck and Pumpkins

Thanks to a comment from Hudson, we went into, rather than bypassing, Montpelier and were delighted that we did – what a lovely city! There are some remarkable buildings, beautiful spires and covetable homes in lovely colours. We had coffee and a warm cinnamon bun in a community cafe called Bagito’s that had painted light shades and walls and live music. Painting things seems a local thing to do; we saw concrete barriers painted by local children and a charming street mural.

We followed a painted truck out of the city, found a couple more old covered bridges at Northfield Falls and saw yet more pumpkins decorating people’s porches. It’s lovely how Autumn is celebrated here right from the beginning of October all the way to Hallowe’en.

Road Trip Day 5 – Falls, Fungi, Cabins and a Horse at the Bar

A delightful day walking in the area around Stowe – to Bingham Falls along the Mill Trail, discovering old cabins ( one where a blacksmith lived and left his beautiful handiwork around the building) and walking in, indeed surrounded by, leaves the colour of jewels.

Road Trip Day 3 – Mountains, Bridges and and Waterfalls

Being five hours ahead of ourselves means that we wake up very early and can see the dawn – in the photo, rising between Thorn Mountain and Black Mountain.

After a walk to Jackson Falls this morning we did a drive to find more covered bridges and went into The White Mountain National Forest where the Autumn leaves were just spectacular – oohs and aahs around every corner. Another beautiful day! .

Road Trip Day 2 – to New Hampshire

Today we found our second lighthouse, our first covered bridge , travelled through more small towns with pretty white Churches, admiring leaves and Hallowe’en decorations everywhere but not always able to take photos, especially when it was my turn to drive! Come with us as we drive from Kennebunkport to Cape Elizabeth to see The Portland Head Light, one we know of through the well known painting by Edward Hopper which we have on our landing at home.
After a picnic lunch by the sea, with home just across the pond, we set off for Jackson, up past Sebago Lake then Naples where I met a lovely chap while admiring his Harley. I was telling him how I have always wanted to ride a Harley and he laughed, saying so had he. Just two weeks ago he went on a two day course, the day after he bought his beautiful bike and now here he was riding and having fun! He just turned 64 so there’s hope yet!
On then to Jackson, going through the Jackson Covered Bridge to find the quaintest General Store and on to our hotel for two nights where we have a view of the mountains. .

Road Trip Day 1 – Boston to Kennebunkport

So many new things! From the sunset over Boston last night, to the wonderful breakfast this morning, up the coast towards to Maine, stopping off to find Cape Neddick Lighthouse at York, going through some delightful small towns, seeing some signs of Autumn colours, finding interesting mailboxes ( I love American mailboxes!) and arriving in Kennebunkport in time to explore the town and having a fabulous Lobster meal for dinner. What a first day!
