Learning Wolof, Our Czech Painter and Singing with the Inglehearts

1  Last night Daniel gave us our first few phrases of Wolof to learn and we’ve been practising. I particularly like the greeting, ‘Yangui si jam?’ (Are you at peace?) and the reply, ‘Waw, mangui si jam.” (Yes, I am peaceful.) We will need some Wolof as well as French for our trip to Senegal in April.

2  Veronika, our Czech painter (of ColourGirlz) has been here today painting the woodwork in our hall. She is a meticulous worker and is so appreciative of my home baking.  I had made her some of my Mum’s Mocha Crispies.

3  Singing with Claire and the Inglehearts has as usual lifted my spirits even when I didn’t realise they had any lifting to do! We sang a beautiful new piece composed by Claire which was moving enough in its initial learning and will be amazing when we have learned it all. I am so happy that we moved where we did so that our lovely neighbours could introduce me to Claire!

Clematis, Warm sunshine and Gaudete

1  Clematis still in flower and gorgeous. I also took photos today of nasturtiums, fuchsia, passion flowers and Kashmir lilies.

2  Despite the stormy showers and the occasional hailstone shower today, the sun felt warm on my back when I was out taking the photos.

3  Choir tonight was brilliant. I love it when we learn something new and have to work hard. Tonight it was a four part harmony for Gaudete which we’ll be singing to the public on Wednesday!

Kath’s jug, Heliotrope and Carols

1  Brought Kath’s jug out of the dishwasher today, reminded again of a beautiful friend and of how much I miss her. The jug comes out every time we have friends round for a meal so that Kath is there with us too…….

2  Heliotrope, Lavender and Verbena Bonariensis all still in flower and it’s only 4 weeks to Christmas! And there are four more Passion flowers.

3  Singing Christmas Carols with the Inglehearts, learning the alto part for ‘While Shepherds Watched’ but missing my friend and singing mentor Jean who is still not well.

Singing, Mr Smith and Daisy’s painting

1  A fabulous singing session with the  Suitcases learning ‘Hark, the Glad Sound’  a Thomas Merritt carol, with the loveliest harmonies that sound like pealing bells. Watching peoples’ faces transforming from puzzlement to absolute beaming joy as they ‘got’ their part was magic!

2  Coming home from choir to Mr Smith telling me, with a big grin, “Today feels like the first day of the rest of my life!”  The osteopath has fixed the problem at last after 3 weeks of treatment but four months of pain. Thank you, Joe.  (Update – 23/11/2011 The relief was short-lived. Joe is still trying to help.)

This delights me every day!  It is a wonderfully vibrant painting by my dear sister, Daisy, who now lives in Hawaii, and who is so happy in her new life. We’ve put it in the spare bedroom so that we can see it from the hall, all the way up the stairs, when we come out of the bedroom and it lifts my spirits every time I see it. Thank you, Deborah.

Thursday 3rd November

1 After a half term of absence for one reason or another, I returned to my Thursday choir, The Suitcases,  and sang my heart out. I’d been missed!

2 I was put in touch with the friend of a friend who wants to do some volunteering so I was able to share some of our experiences and enthusiasm. That really was a treat and I hope I’ve inspired her!

3 I finished the bootees for the new baby. They look so cute!

Getting started / November 1st

Sometime ago, my lovely friend Sue from choir, shared a link to a blog called Three Beautiful Things. I loved it, and the idea, and resolved to record three things every day that have given me pleasure. I decided to start on November 1st but it’s taken me until now to get up and running – but I have been keeping notes so here goes:

Tuesday 1st Nov

1  Delighted that our phone and broadband have been mended today. It has been surprisingly hard to do without.

2 We had a walk up to Wheal Coates, in cold bright sunshine. The sea was turquoise, waves were crashing beneath us and the raw energy in the air put springs in our steps.

3 We Skyped with our Grandchildren in London. For the first time, Tabitha, 7 months old, recognised us and beamed and clapped her hands with delight. She kept looking from one to the other and grinning. That gave us both enormous pleasure as it does to have delightful conversations with Jake. KJ gets the odd word in!
