Exhibition, Penzance and Pudding

Today was the last day of an exhibition we wanted to see at the art gallery at Tremenheere gardens. Heavy rain was forecast so we planned on walking in Penzance afterwards rather than going up into the sculpture gardens. My favourite piece was this rather quirky sonnet by Julia Giles.   .

Sycamore Seed Sonnet by Julia Giles

There were lots of little treasures to be enjoyed on our mizzly stroll around the streets of Penzance. Share them with us.

We are watching the Euros final as I write and our pud for half time is in the right colours – meringue and cream with beautiful juicy red berries from Sue-next-door’s allotment. Thanks, Sue!

Street Art, Frida Kahlo and A Frog

As I walked up to the Buttermarket today for the Frida Kahlo market, I went past some street art that we have only driven by before. Today I was able to get a photograph. This is my favourite of all the street art in our town.

The market was brilliantly, vibrant,  full of colour and life and happy people.

We spent the afternoon weeding at the allotment – the weeds have grown out of all proportion to the vegetables  and have loved all the rain!  A lovely frog joined us. I love his long toes, stripey legs and black, shiny eyes. .

Purple and White, Gold and A Poem

The Aliums and Poppies are blooming together as designed. That colour scheme doesn’t always work as my attempt at the same colours with tulips showed in the Spring.

Our rose is giving us bloom after bloom and has such a lovely old fashioned rose scent. Does anyone else remember collecting the petals of roses and trying to make perfume? It always ended up as a rather gruesome mixture both in looks and smell!

Today I have sorted the place where I put cuttings and bits of paper that I want to keep for some reason. I’m not sure when I cut this rather lovely and very touching poem out of the paper. It’s by Christopher Reid who was the Costa Book of the Year winner in 2009 and was the Saturday Poem in The Guardian sometime in 2010.

Eco Park, Bee and Poppy

My choirs are meeting up at the Porthtowan Eco Park where we can sing in the atrium, covered but with plenty of air circulating. Over the weeks I’ve been watching the development of a beautiful mural and today stopped to talk to the artist, Camilla, to tell her how much I love her work. All the elements of the eco park are here –  vegetables and edible flowers growing, wind turbines turning, musicians playing and singing, food being served, campers playing and all in such lovely earthy colours. She’s working on an elevated platform and is well wrapped up against the wind and mizzle.

The bee flew off just as I focussed!

A poppy self-seeded in the edible garden in the trough just outside the kitchen window. I know it isn’t edible but I left it there because it is beautiful.

Sparkles, Blossoms and A Blue Butterfly

We walked on the cliffs at Godrevy today and the lovely Mr S saw glorious blue sparkles in the waves tumbling in. We decided it was his polaroid sunglasses causing the effect that I couldn’t see so I took a photo through the glasses towards the sea and I’m delighted with the result.

The Sea thrift has gone replaced by these larger white flowers that start out pink and go white as they grow.

There was a tiny blue butterfly fluttering around the hedgerow. It looks white in the middle of the photo.

Breakfast, Cut Flowers and A Painting

I had my waffle with maple syrup and blueberries this morning.

Our Sweet Peas are lovely and smell divine.

There’s a story behind this lovely painting of Truro Cathedral by F. Robson, possibly Featherstone Robson, 1880-1936.The lovely Mr S and I met in late October 1966 while at college in South Yorkshire. I had come from Truro and Mr S from Acton, London. Walking through Acton in early January 1967 after being in London for a few days to meet his parents as we had just decided to get married, we spotted this painting in a second hand shop and it seemed like a sign!  It can’t have been expensive but I can’t remember how much. We bought it and it has had pride of place ever since.

Emma Raducanu, Low Tide and Rain

Sorry, can’t post tonight, too caught up in the game at Wimbledon!

P.S.   6th July

So sorry that Emma Raducanu had to withdraw with illness.I’m not usually a tennis fan but I find her inspirational and send her all the very best for her future

It was such a lovely morning we went to Chapelporth at 8.30 at low tide with the intention of walking along the beach to under the cliffs where Wheal Coates looks over the sea. However the low tide wasn’t low at all! We couldn’t go around the first rock and as soon as the tide turned, it raced inshore. There is a facebook page called Preposterous Parking in Cornwall which often shows cars caught by the tide!

Then it rained all afternoon and torrents fell in the evening. Here’s a bit of the garden through a very wet window.

4th July and Pasty Party

Happy Independence Day to all our friends and family across the pond.

There was a Pasty Party this afternoon at the allotment, the first time all the allotmenteers have been able to gather together for many, many months.  Here is my lovely neighbour delivering the orders.

We’ve had a lovely weekend with Daughter No 1. How precious these times are after such a long time apart.

Cornish Language, Produce and A Special Dinner

Our buses are teaching us Cornish phrases!

Our Allotment community is really lovely to be a part of and their generosity remarkable.  I went down to collect a few Mange Touts for dinner and was given some Strawberries and beautiful freshly podded peas. What a colourful collection.

Daughter No 1 is with us this weekend and we are celebrating her birthday which was in March! Confit duck with fresh allotment veg and  Cornish potatoes from our local greengrocer and a Blueberry and Strawberry Pavlova. It’s 8 months since we were able to be together so this meal has been a celebration of that as well as her missing birthday.

Moth, Allium and Crocosmia

All today’s beautiful things were found by the lovely Mr S – a moth last night on the mirror in the hall, a lovely bud on the Allium and buds on a Crocosmia in someone’s patch at the allotment.   I’ll try to remember to photograph them when they are in full bloom. We think the moth is a Dew Moth but are open to suggestions, as always.
