A Plaque, Captain Upton’s Slip and A Special Mural

I noticed a commemorative plaque today that I haven’t seen before despite having used this short cut on many occasions.

Falmouth history

Captain Richard Upton, a former smuggler turned excise man who went on to become Mayor of Falmouth on two occasions, lived in the house at the top of Upton’s Slip which is in the picture below.

There is a mural on the way out of one of the car parks which was renewed last year and looks brilliant.

Please go to http://www.spectrumasd.org/epic-aims-church-street-mural/

to see both sides of the mural and to read about the project which celebrates Falmouth as a community and promotes awareness of autism in a positive way. You can read about each of the children involved. It is truly inspiring.

P.S. Added 7th April 2018.
In the comments below, you will see that I have been asked about the figurehead at the bottom of the slip. I found this short Youtube video about her, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cc7cPW2LeuI

Eggs, Catkins and Tulips

Friends from choir often bring fresh eggs from their chickens to sell on a Thursday morning. I love the special enormous blue one in this half dozen.

We have had a hard couple of weeks with the lovely Mr S  working every day to get the boat ready for launch and me recovering from the virus that hit three weeks ago and which has left me throughly whisht, as my Mum used to say. We went out for dinner tonight to celebrate the launch and in the car park saw these gorgeous Spring welcoming Catkins.

Every table in The Royal Oak in Perranwell had tulips in a small vase and the ones on the mantlepiece were beautifully reflected the mirror.  We had a fabulous meal!

Scarf, Maya Angelou and Martin Luther King

I needed to have a golden yellow scarf for today for the funeral of our choir member who died in March. He was a staunch Cornishman and wanted us to wear black and golden yellow, Cornish colours, and yesterday I found this beauty, yellow gold with purple, white and green – just perfect. It was a beautiful Ceremony, full of singing  and joy as well as some tears, a real celebration of a life well lived.

My new scarf for Paul’s Ceremony

Maya Angelou was born on this day in 1928 and as I may not still be writing my blog in 10 years to celebrate her Centenary, here I give you another of her beauties, ‘Come, and be my Baby.’ You can find her wonderful ‘Still I Rise’ poem here.
Come, and be my Baby
The highway is full of big cars
going nowhere fast
And folks is smoking anything that’ll burn
Some people wrap their lies around a cocktail glass
And you sit wondering
where you’re going to turn
I got it.
Come. And be my baby.

Some prophets say the world is gonna end tomorrow
But others say we’ve got a week or two
The paper is full of every kind of blooming horror
And you sit wondering
What you’re gonna do.
I got it.
Come. And be my baby.
It is 50 years ago on this date that Martin Luther king was assassinated. To mark this occasion, the 5pm news programme on BBC Radio 4 played part of his I have a Dream speech that I had never heard before. MLK explains, in wonderful rhetoric, what would have happened or not happened if he had sneezed after being stabbed some years before. Do have a listen.

Ripples, Reflection and A Rock

I took a detour today to go by Swanpool – no swans where I was but a Coot and some beautiful reeds. I love the wriggly reflections of the reeds in the water.

Where I parked there was a long muddy and still puddle where the trees were beautifully reflected.

I went to help the lovely Mr S with some last jobs on Skippalong before she goes back into the water tomorrow morning. I left the Kernow Rock that I found the other day in the nearby carpark, having added the words, ‘Be happy’ to it.

In A Window, Front Garden and My Stone

Down an alley in town, in a window high up above the people, was a forgotten Father Christmas figure looking out down the alley .

Leftover Father Christmas

Our front garden is full of Daffodils underneath the Silver Birch and near the  dark purple Pittosporum.

I found a Kernow Rock in town a couple of days ago. I’m going to take that one into Truro tomorrow. I found a small rock in our garden, washed and painted it and today took it to hide in a Cornish hedge…….. It is turquoise with the words ‘Be kind. Be happy’ written on it.

Man Engine, Cornish Passport and Wood Burner

The wonderful Man Engine rose to his full height at Heartlands today as we sang to him and the crowd who braved the rain and wind.

I earned my Cornish passport today!

Even with four layers, I did get rather cold and damp (it was only 8C today) so when I came home, after toast and honey next door, I lit the wood burner.
