Goodbyes, July Flowers and A Poem

07 Jul

1    We saw our Best Beloveds off on the train this morning. As my lovely wise friend, Nicky, said, “Goodbyes aren’t always easy;  the gift for me is knowing that the feelings of sadness are a mirror to the love I feel.” That is exactly it.

2   Our garden continues to bloom.

3   This poem was on a blog I read recently and it encapsulates my philosophy of finding the beautiful in the everyday where “the world offers itself to your imagination.”   Thank you, Kath. The poet, Mary Oliver is new to me and I shall look for more of her work.

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

For special people I know, nor do they, we never say goodbye, we just say hello.

I have read a fair bit of Mary Oliver, this one especially I remember, and mostly posted by people such as yourself who lingers on her words as one might a sweet tasting candy. Your right this one is apt for you and for following the photographs of flowers. In the scheme of nature and humanity, we all belong; them, they and us.

I like that idea, takes the sting out of the parting even though we don’t know when we will meet again…….
The Mary Oliver is a linger on the tongue poem, just so. I should now have time to read some more. It has been a very busy month and as we return to ‘normal’ I am getting around to visiting blogs I love ( yours) and replying rather late to comments.
I love your last sentence – if only everyone could think like this. 🙂

Ha, no worries. Remember, your speaking to the ‘poster child of tardiness’ and as such, more of sponge at the moment than a faucet. Your prolific here, always have been, an you amaze me. I’ve probably mentioned previously, thinking ‘does she ever sleep’.

Goodbyes are certainly not easy. Can grasp something of how you must feel. Beautiful poem. The last five lines particularly struck me.

Glad you liked the poem too. You have been experiencing the goodbyes for so long and now you are together, so lovely. Sadly, our Best Beloveds seem to have changed their minds about returning home to live out our years together……….

That’s sad Sally. So sorry about that.
