This is one of my favourite “Inside” photos. It shows the contents of the case that I took to South Africa when we went volunteering in a village called Mapoch. The stacking cups and the wooden beads were toys which our own children had played with many years ago.
The subsequent photos show some of the toys we took being played with by the children in the pre-school. We went to help build an extra classroom and to work with the teacher and the children. It remains one of the best things I have ever done. The village and the people will be a part of me forever.
Sadly I lost all my photos from the trip but I did keep a diary so these photos are from the diary and are therefore not the best quality.

Rather like this format of scanned images from your diary, reminiscent of the good old days before digital storage.
Though I never have ventured to Africa, I hope or call it just a dream to someday, in what capacity am not certain -oh my camera would have a happy face on it. What is often over looked when it comes to many of the communities in various countries of Africa are the people who over the years have developed they own unique way of fighting poverty and the problems associated. To often the ugly realities are magnified, instead looking at those within keep trying to come up with innovative solutions based on grass roots, hit the ground running, do what needs doing approach …..you must have been in seventh heaven just interacting with children at play, let alone everything else you did and seen there.

We went as soon as we retired from teaching and both loved the whole experience. You’ll do it if you really want to! 🙂
