Tube Announcement, Cornish Daffodils and A Song

1   A young friend of mine heard this at Victoria tube station in London the other day –

‘Hello you shiny, happy, lovely Friday people, welcome aboard the Soul Train! Have a wonderful day!’

What a brilliant way to bring smiles to people’s faces on their morning commute. Happiness indeed!

2   These gorgeous Cornish daffodils bring smiles to us whenever we go into the kitchen. I love the reflection in the shiny surface too.

3    It was so good to be back at singing after being ill. We sang several of my favourites tonight including the wonderful ‘Oxygen” which you can listen to here. It was written by our own Choir leader, Claire Ingleheart, for the Suffragette play, ‘Oxygen’  performed last year here in Cornwall and all along the route of the Suffragette March from Lands End to London. Have a look at this post if you’d like to know more and if you put Suffragette in the search, all the posts will come up for you.

Courgette Flowers, Old Family Recipe and Oxygen, the Song

1   The courgettes are really taking off. I’m so looking forward to being able to harvest some.

2   Our eldest daughter is with us for a week as she walks some of the coastal path with a friend. She asked if I had any Picnic Pie in the freezer – a staple of walks and picnics for our family for as long as I can remember. This afternoon, I dug out my Granny’s Recipe book, a note book given to her in 1903 and found the recipe for Picnic Pie from 1946 and made one ready for tomorrow’s walk.

3   While we were in London, Claire’s three choirs performed in Carn Marth Quarry near Redruth. Here, you can hear one of the songs, music by Claire Ingleheart and lyrics by Natalie McGrath, written for the play, Oxygen, about the Suffragist March from Lands End to London..   It was filmed by Tina Wheeler, with apologies for the noisy crowd, unruly children, dogs hitting tripod, and the wind.    The tour of the play is coming to an end and it has had brilliant reviews.
Rather belatedly,  I want to thank El Guapo for his delightful post when I asked him for help to put the word out about the play for me.

Red Roses in Bodmin, Herbs and Purple Poppy

1   One hundred years ago today, the Suffragists on the Great Suffrage Pilgrimage of 1913 from Land’s End to London, stopped in Bodmin where the Mayor greeted them with a red rose each in a gesture of solidarity. Today, on the tour of the play, Oxygen by Natalie McGrath, along the route, the troupe stopped in Bodmin and were presented with red roses by the Mayor in remembrance of June 25th 1913.  We were there! It was brilliant to hear some of the speeches again and to join the cast in the singing of the song that we learned yesterday.

2   I love being able to cut fresh herbs for our salad dressing – two kinds of mint, chives and garlic chives, sage and three kinds of thyme. Delicious.

3   The purple Poppies and the white Cistus have both opened today in my purple, white and green Suffragette garden. What excellent timing!

Carl Sagan, Crinodendron and Oxygen, the Song

1   I’ve been learning about Carl Sagan by reading Alex’s amazing blog and then today was sent this quotation  by a friend: Carl Sagan talking about books and I just love it.

2   Our neighbours’ Crinodendron hookerianum is full of blossom. It is so beautiful. Our young one, which had  more than thirty flowers last year, has none this. We’re wondering what we have done wrong…….

3   At choir tonight, we have started to learn one of the beautiful songs from the play, Oxygen, which I’ve been raving about for the last few days. Our leader, Claire Ingleheart, wrote the music for the play and was the Musical Director.

P.S. Here’s a review of the play, Oxygen, in The Stage. The reviewer agrees with me!
