Seedlings, Ingenuity and A Mantra

We have hundreds of onion seedlings at Roots and they will be ready for transplanting next week.

Today we transplanted 200+ baby lettuce and pak choi plants and they are now in one of the big  poly tunnels as there is no room in the smaller prop  tunnel where the propagating takes place. The ingenuity comes in the suspended racks to create more room for the baby plants.

We are ten days into February so it’s a bit late to share this month’s mantra from The 2026 Almanac but I like it so here it is:

Storm, Almanac and A Journal

We are in the middle of a Red, danger to life,  storm warning, winds expected between 80 and 100 mph so we are staying. tucked up indoors. Our supermarket delivery driver rang to say he’d been called back to the store to keep safe. Fortunately, we have enough in so for us that’s not a problem. It may well be for others. We are also hoping that the poly tunnels at Community Roots and at the allotment all stay safe.

We have been buying Lia Leedertz’s Almanac for several years. If you haven’t seen them, have a look. I love that there’s information about skies and stars, tides and a monthly planting guide and I especially like the seasonal song and the recipe.

One of my birthday presents is a very lovely journal, “Thrive Where You Are Planted – A guided journal to help you connect with the natural wonders in your neighbourhood.’ This is such a perfectly chosen gift from someone who knows of my love of the natural and the beautiful. It begins in March as Nature wakes up from its winter sleep and I am really looking forward to recording the wonders all around us. In the meantime, I’m going to read from cover to cover as I do with new cookery books! Thank you, H, a perfect present.

Sea, Jigsaw and Cake

Our singing rehearsal was in Porthtowan today with a view of the crashing waves – wonderful.

We’ve  finished our Shakespeare’s London jigsaw. It’s been good fun on the wet and windy days.

We have a beautiful Almanac which has a recipe each month. Today I made the one for February, Oat and Blueberry Crumble Cake and it is delicious.

Almanac, Biscuits and Planter

We have a delightful little book. Every month has information about the moon and the tides, bird of the month, what to plant and what to harvest , a recipe and a folk song for the month. It is really lovely. I looked ahead to July and found a recipe for Flower Biscuits..

So, I made some! They are  a bit shortbready and have the edible flowers pressed into the biscuit before baking and a lemony glaze when they come out of the oven.

I planted up a tub with purple, white and petunias this afternoon once it was cool enough to work outside.
