Desert Island Discs, Jelly Babies and A Surprise

1   BBC Radio 4 brought more delights today. The guest on Desert Island Discs was the nurse and humanitarian, Dame Claire Bertschinger, about whom I knew very little. She was fascinating and if you can find the time, I think you would enjoy it too. Here’s the link to the programme.
Apart from hearing about her inspirational life, her choices were very touching for me. There was a verse from Hiawatha, the very verse I learned at primary school and then there was ‘The Green Eye of the Little Yellow God’ which my Dad used to recite to us having learned it at his primary school. I found it so touching because I spent the last seventeen days of my lovely Father’s life in the hospice with him and one day, though very, very ill, he said, “I wonder if I can remember this,’ and went on to recite the whole thing to his and my delight. You can listen to the poem here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUoZAvwvUQA

2   Sometimes only Jelly Babies will do and the lovely Mr S went down to the corner shop to get me some.

3    When Mr S came home he found a big cardboard box on the doorstep and inside it were the most beautiful flowers, a present from our youngest daughter for Mothers’ Day, from a Cornish flower grower. I have put them into our lovely amber glass vase that was a wedding present for my Mum and Dad in 1939!

The Ballad of Joe Hill, Singing and Limequats

1  I was reminded of these words of Shelley yesterday

“Music, when soft voices die,
Vibrates in the memory-  “

when I heard ‘The Ballad Of Joe Hill’ sung by Paul Robeson, one of my all time favourite voices singing one of my lovely Dad’s favourite songs, and one which we played at Dad’s Humanist funeral. It was chosen by Ed Milliband in Desert Island Discs on Sunday and has been in my head ever since. Some of you will know this – but it doesn’t matter how long ago you ‘lost’ a parent, they never actually leave you and music can suddenly bring them back into the kitchen as clearly as if they were still alive.

3   Singing with The Inglehearts tonight was especially good. There’s something very special about singing in harmony with friends. Here’s a public Thank you to Claire Ingleheart for her work, her friendship and her very special talent which she shares so freely.

3   The Crystallised Limequats look beautiful in their jar.

Radio 4, Redruth and the Present of a Pheasant

1  I just love Radio 4! Today, we’ve had the delightful David Attenborough on Desert Island Discs, the inimitable Samuel Pepys and his very entertaining Diary and this afternoon, John Steinbeck’s ‘The Pearl’ beautifully dramatised. Tomorrow we are promised Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’. Brilliant!

2  We shopped in a very busy Redruth this afternoon, beautiful sunshine, a lovely busker and everything we needed. I am so glad we moved back to Cornwall and especially to Redruth! I just love David Kemp’s Tinners’ Hounds!

3  Lucy came home from her trek-training on Dartmoor on Monday with a ready jointed pheasant for us, sent by Brenda with whom she stayed over. I’ve cooked it in cider as Brenda suggested and used Delia Smith’s recipe serving it, as she suggests, with caramelised apples.Lucy took homemade marmalade and Cornish Daffodils.
