Salad, Poster and A Post Box Topper

I’m loving being able to make new salady dishes with food we have grown. This recipe was from BBC Good Food and is cucumber and  fennel in a sour cream and vinegar sauce. It was delicious! Our evening meal of a locally made pie  also had homegrown potato salad and homegrown leaves. Pud is another meringue filled with creme fraiche and homegrown tayberries and black currants from the garden.

I love that, despite everything going on, Ukrainians in Kyiv are having a book festival. Brilliant  poster.

A lovely friend has sent me a photo of a delightful postbox topper near her in Truro.

Fannie Farmer, Lunch and A Dahlia

I love BBC Radio 4! Today’s treat was Broadcasting House where cookbooks and recipes were discussed. Gillian Reynolds’ favourite cookbook was The Fannie Farmer Cookbook, a book I was given in 1979 by my Brother and SIL who were living in America and one which I still turn to for inspiration. G R’s favourite recipe was for Lemon Pudding, one I haven’t made for years and must do again before too long.

I had no idea what to do for lunch today but there was an Aubergine, some Spinach and some Chestnut Mushrooms in the fridge so I turned to BBC Good Food, put in the ingredients and the following came up: https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2899/aubergines-filled-with-spinach-and-mushrooms

It was delicious!

Last night’s wild weather took down our Runner Beans (now recovered) and various flowers. This rather top-heavy Dahlia is now indoors.

Veggie Supper, Antonio Machado and A Camellia

We had a Butternut Squash, a couple of Peppers and some Mozzarella in the fridge and BBC Good Food came up with  Roasted Squash with Mozzarella and Pesto – delicious!

I found this poem this afternoon and it touched something in me.  The questions in the first stanza appealed and the answer speaks for me.

Is My Soul Asleep?

Is my soul asleep?
Have those beehives that work
in the night stopped? And the water-
wheel of thought, is it
going around now, cups
empty, carrying only shadows?

No, my soul is not asleep.
It is awake, wide awake.
It neither sleeps nor dreams, but watches,
its eyes wide open
far-off things, and listens
at the shores of the great silence.

Antonio Machado

I only discovered this poet today. It is the anniversary of his death in 1939. He was a refugee and was among thousands of others including his mother, his brother and his brother’s family fleeing Spain on foot across the Pyrenees in the last days of January 1939. He died a month later in the French village of Collioure.

Camellias are in flower all over the neighbourhood and are very cheery on these dull days of mizzle.
