Inman Park, Mocking Bird and Lullaby

Let me take you on a brief walk in Inman Park, Atlanta, taking in the mini libraries, some flowers and a sculpture.

We passed a chattering tree and realised that we were too close to a pair of Mocking birds and their nest.

The mocking bird brought to mind the lullaby, Mama’s going to buy you a mocking bird, which is an old Southern US lullaby, appropriate given where we are right now.

Hush, little baby, don’t say a word,

Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don’t sing,

Mama’s gonna buy you a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring turns brass,

Mama’s gonna buy you a looking glass.
And if that looking glass is broke,

Mama’s gonna buy you a billy goat,
And if that billy goat won’t pull,

Mama’s gonna buy you a cart and a bull.
And if that cart and bull turn over,

Mama’s gonna buy you a dog named Rover.
And if that dog named Rover won’t bark,

Mama’s gonna buy you a horse and a cart.
And if that horse and cart fall down,

you’ll still be the sweetest little baby in town.

Last Night’s Sunset, White Poppy and Coorie Doon

1   We are about 10 miles from the North coast of Cornwall where the most beautiful sunsets can be seen as the sun slips into the sea. We knew last night’s was a lovely one as the setting sun lights up the windows of a small terrace that we can see from our front window.

2   From the back window this morning, I spotted that a white poppy has opened. I took this from indoors and will get a better shot when the rain and wind stop. For June 1st it is very cool – the horses in the back field all have their coats on again!

3     We are learning this beautiful lullaby at choir. Coorie Doon (miners’ lullaby) written and sung here by Matt McGinn. Coorie Doon has two meanings. Firstly it means ‘snuggle down’ as he is suggesting to his child. Later, he is using the term to say this is what he does when he is down the coal mine  – he is ‘crouching down’ in the dark, the dust and damp as he earns his living – “we must hae oor heat, oor light,/ Oor fire and oor lamp.”

Lullaby, Miss Peapod’s Cafe and Winnie the Pooh

1 Singing was lovely this morning, only one choir baby with us today and at 17 months she is a delight! We started with an African lullaby ‘Mwena La La’ which sounds so beautiful as a round.

2 After singing we go downstairs to Miss Peapod’s cafe for coffee and catching up. There is a charming new piece of artwork on the wall, a beautiful collage of a pea-pod made by a local artist, Penny MacBeth.

3 I don’t know why this particular Winnie the Poohism came into my head today, but as an English teacher, I had a small poster of it up in my classroom to encourage all wobbly spellers!
“My spelling is Wobbly. It’s good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.”

Snail, Elephant and Megruli Nana

1   Somehow a snail found his way into our sun room. I love the little white dashes on his neck but was concerned to see that his shell seems to be cracked. I helped him out into the back field.

2   My beloved wooden elephant got a polish today. I fell for him many years ago in a flea market, paid rather too much for him and had to go home to fetch Mr S to carry him home as he’s far too heavy for me.

3   The school where we normally meet for choir being closed, we met in Treslothnan Church and had a brilliant sing. The acoustics are lovely. The beautiful thing was one piece especially that we are learning, Megruli Nana, a lullaby from Samagreto, West Georgia and it is absolutely stunning. Listen to this version I have found on Youtube…..Megruli nana  It will be brilliant when we’ve finished learning it.
