Allotment Week, Zucchini Flowers and A Poem

Today is the last day of National Allotment Week and every day this week we have eaten from the allotment – broad beans, runner beans, golden beans, purple dwarf beans, courgettes, patty pan squash, tomatoes and a chilli.

I keep hoping that there will be more than one Courgette flower so that I can play with stuffing them! Although, as Shirley Conran once said, “Life’s too short to stuff a mushroom,” so maybe it’s too short to stuff a courgette flower!  They are pretty though.

Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

One Year Old Wall, Courgette Flower and Young Bird

1    A year ago we had just had a new wall built and I had just finished planting it up. Most of the plants are thriving and we are delighted with it.

2   The Courgette plants have a flower. I can’t understand why some people batter and deep-fry the flowers with out waiting for the courgettes to form but maybe if there were a glut…….

3   After mowing the lawn the lovely Mr S put my sculpture back at a different angle and he now looks like a young bird rather than a Fledgling. I’ll have him back as a Fledgling next Spring!
