I grew up in Truro, Cornwall, and always loved the Cathedral. It seems to grow out of the centre of the city and dominates the skyline. On my birthday, New Year’s Eve, as quite a little girl, I was allowed to stay up to hear the Cathedral bells to ring in the New Year and we used to stand on the doorstep in the dark and listen to the chimes. I just loved this – so much so that when I was exiled in Yorkshire and after all our children had left home, we came to Truro for several New Year holidays just so that I could hear the bells.
