St Clements’ Cake, Tongs and Be Not Inhospitable

I had a request for cake today and this one was in the freezer needing only its icing with orange zest and juice. It’s a lemony cake with orange icing – hence St Clements.

I love these silly little tea-bag tongs!

What good advice this is, just the first line alone whether they be in disguise or not. Be kind, be welcoming, be generous – indeed, follow the Golden Rule of treating others as you would wish to be treated. I wrote before of the Golden Rule here and here. Do check out these pages too. I just love this whole picture as well as its words, an environment I would love to be in. Almost any bookshop is a good place to be!

The Golden Rule, Winter Walk and Snail Shell

1   Those of you who are regular readers will know I post about the Golden Rule from time to time. This came to me today. I find it fascinating that so many cultures have the same philosophy abut looking after each other – yet governments seem not to be able to follow this really simple rule.

2   We went for a very cold and windy walk today along the cliffs at Sunset Beach near Godrevy. The wind surfers were having great fun. Click on any photo for detail. In the last one you can see that one of the wind-surfers is carried above the waves.

3   There are always pretty snail shells along the cliffs.

World Kindness Day, The Golden Rule and ShelterBox

1   Today is World Kindness Day.  Being kind to each other must be one of the most important attributes of the human.

2    I wrote a few weeks ago here of the Golden Rule, treat others as you wish to be treated. These words of Arthur Dunn ask an important question and one that is partly answered in the work of ShelterBox below. If only we all (including our governments) could live by this philosophy, the world would indeed be a kinder place.

Why should the Golden Rule be so difficult in business and foreign relations? The happily married treat each other as they wish to be treated. They treat their children better than they wish to be treated themselves. Unless we do unto a friend as we do unto ourselves, we lose a friend. In an emergency we rush to the aid of our neighbour. Is it so great a step to realise that all people everywhere are neighbours?

3     Today from ShelterBox:  “PHILIPPINES UPDATE: 504 ShelterBox tents have now arrived in Manila, Philippines. Distribution of this aid will begin as soon as it has cleared customs. A further 224 ShelterBoxes and 576 ShelterBox tents are currently en route to Cebu, Philippines with airfreight courtesy of DFID. This shipment is hoped to arrive in the Philippines 13 November. Nine SRT members are carrying out assessments in Cebu, Bohol and Tacloban. Additional team members are also on their way.

An extra 200 ShelterBoxes destined for the Philippines were packed by warehouse volunteers at ShelterBox HQ in Cornwall yesterday. ShelterBox are looking to help up to 4,000 families in the Philippines in the immediate future, with potential for more help if it’s needed.  We couldn’t do any of this without your support and donations.”                We are lucky enough to be both safe and able to have donated for a Shelterbox. What a beautiful idea it was that Tom Henderson, the Founder of this charity had all those years ago.  Find out all about the charity and the boxes here.

Ribbon Cloth, Stormy Sky and The Golden Rule

1    Today I have posted the lovely new ribbon cloth I have just made for one of our Grandchildren. Hopefully it will arrive tomorrow.

2    Thank you to all who hoped we would be okay in the storm. We were lucky here in Cornwall, not getting as severe a battering as promised nor as bad as it has been further up country though the day has been full of squalls.

3     A good blogging friend today wrote about kindness. As she says, many in our blogging world do. We are all trying to follow the Golden Rule, treating others with the kindness with which we would want to be treated. When on holiday I found a little book, “The Golden Rule, as expressed by cultures around the world” which I found quite fascinating.
