St Piran’s Day, Singing and Marching for Our NHS

St Piran’s day is tomorrow and there have been parades all over Cornwall today. In Redruth, the rain held off just for the duration of the parade. The theme is both St Piran represented by his flag, black with a white cross, and daffodils. Every local school takes part and the whole event is one of joy.

As part of the celebrations, my choir had been asked to sing Cornish songs and though the audience was quite small they were very enthusiastic.

I had to leave the performance early to catch the train to Truro, a train it turned out, which was full of people coming up from Penzance to the Save Our NHS March. There were tens of thousands marching in London and several hundred of us in Truro. This photo was taken at the end as the crowd is beginning to leave.

The Redruth Lamb is at the head of the Parade. The Lamb and Flag emblem is used by Redruth Town Council as the emblem for the town. It was originally a mark used by Cornish tin smelting works to stamp the ingots of tin. The symbol seems to have been used first in the woollen trade during the Middle Ages. By the 19th century, it was suggested that the lamb represented purity, obviously a good selling point for the local tin smelters.

Truro, Quilting and Singing

1 We had a lovely day out in Truro today and the highlight for me was the …..

2 ……… Quilting Exhibition, Saints of Cornish Churches, in Truro Cathedral. The works were fabulous! I give you just a small selection here and am sorry that I didn’t visit earlier to spread the word about them. Sadly, today was the last day. I hope each quilt will be going to its relevant Church or will be displayed somewhere else as they are magnificent pieces of art. Do read the information about the particular Saint depicted and about the artist’s intentions. Please do click on each photo to appreciate the intricacies and the beauty of these works of art.

St David’s Day, St Piran’s Parade and Spring

1 In the week we have been away, lots of our daffodils have bloomed so as I opened the curtains on this St David’s Day morning, there they were to greet me and to celebrate my Welsh heritage. Happy St David’s Day to my family, my Welsh friends and all my Welsh readers.

2 St Piran’s Day is on 5th March but is being celebrated in our town, and many other towns and villages in Cornwall, today. You can find the legend of St Piran, the Patron Saint of Tinners and of Cornwall, here.There has been a parade, Cornish music and food, the shops are decorated with the black and white flag and with daffodils to mark St David’s Day too and the celebrations will be going on all day and evening. As Cornish tinners went all over the world to work and to share their expertise, so this day is celebrated all over the world. Do let me know if there is an event near you.
