Looks good. Look even better, roasted with butter. Yes I like my squash simple.

    Go for 4.

Roasted how? In halves, whole or in chunks? I’m new to these squash. Only used butternut before (and our Patty Pans) so all advice very welcome. 🙂

Gem squash are smashing with roasts. We usually boil gem squash then scrape out the pulp and mix it with creamed corn.
They can also be served in halves (left in their skins) either savoury with butter, salt and pepper, or sweet with cinnamon and cream ( not tried it like this but it is supposed to be a traditional favourite in the Afrikaans community, especially among kids.) I guess you could mix in anything if you felt like it – Jam?

I’ve just planted seeds for gems, butternut and pumpkin. Be ready for harvest in the new year.
We still have a few home-grown pumpkin from the beginning of the year! They are excellent to store.
For Sunday lunch, the wife often roasts pumpkin and butternut in chunks and with the pumpkin uses cinnamon.
        Delicious!
At xmas pumpkin is pureed, rolled on a spoon then dipped in sugar and cinnamon and fried into pumpkin fritters, which is a traditional Portuguese dessert.

We cook acorn squash the way Ark describes above: halved, left in their skins, roasted in the over with butter, salt and pepper. Delish!

Oh, that looks like Gem squash on the right. I used to cook that a lot in South Africa – scoop out the seeds and fill with peas/beans which the kids loved! A shame we don’t seem to see it here, though I am sure I have bought it a long time ago from one of the supermarket chains. Sorry to hear you have been under the weather recently.

There’s a South African bloke who grows them. I think he lives in Australia? – sounds like a real Afrikaans farmer! And you can order seeds online.

Australia is no good for me! And I’m useless at growing stuff from seed. I feed the molluscs, not me. 😭
