It’s 28 years since my Mum died on this day and I still want to tell her stuff that excites me or that I need her wisdom on. It doesn’t go away.
Today I want to celebrate her life by recognising some of the gifts that came from her – my love of gardening and of cooking.
She would have been delighted with us having an allotment so here are a couple of the flowers from there today.
After she retired, she used to fill in forms that asked for her profession not as ‘Retired Teacher of the Deaf’ but as Head Gardener.
She was a brilliant cook too so here is a coffee cake I have made today for the cake stall at the Redruth Butter Market stall tomorrow.

It is actually today my mum’s Birthday, she would be 95. It has only been 2 years and I miss her so much. I would love to just phone and say , my Canna lilies are coming and I got many strawberry blooms. We will always miss them. As a Birthday treat for her I will do a simple evening meal, she used to do which is ‘toast Hawai’ – bread, ham, pineapple topped with cheese melted, we always loved it. It is lovely to have good memories and use the knowledge they gave us. Hugs xxx

My mother passed away only last year, and I wish that I could pick up the phone and say “Hi Mum, how do you…?” or “Hi mum, I have … flowering in the garden”. Like your mum, mine was an amazing gardener and cook. Sending you warm wishes and beautiful memories on this day and always.

I so know that feeling and send you love and condolences in your recent loss. It does get easier in that you get used to it but the impulse to call doesn’t go away.

My mother died 25 years ago and it’s true, you always want to share things. She was no gardener and only a plain cook, but she taught me how to bake, and her love of reading and wanting the good things in life by saving for them, not getting into debt, have served me well.

Yes, that generation did give us a good sense of saving for the things you want. I fear for the young people forced into debt for higher education. Once you owe 50K , adding to it can’t seem that bad.

My eldest grandson starts uni this September, his student loan doesn’t even cover his accommodation charges, let alone enable him to eat! No wonder children from lower incomes can’t afford to go to university. Bank of Granny and Granddad will have to come to the rescue I think.
