Baking, Potter and Daffodils

15 Feb

This afternoon I baked, over Skype, with LiveWire No 4 who had seen her cousin’s Victoria sponge last week and wanted to try one her self. It was a tasty success and we had great fun. Of course, I have shared it with my lovely neighbour over a cup of tea in the front garden as before!

I am trying to track down a Cornish potter and thought I would try here. The coffee set, a couple of pieces below,  was given to my Mum, Cicely Wiseman, when she retired, in the 1970s, from teaching at Roskear Primary School where she ran the unit for deaf children. The potter’s initials are JC and I thought I had found her but recently had a reply saying that sadly, I didn’t have the right person. Any help gratefully received.

Our Daffodils are opening beautifully and today, we had sunshine so they glowed.

Are you sure the potter is Cornish?
John Christie is a Scottish potter who has been active for nearly 50 years, apparently.

You might be right, Ark. At 11:37 on the video, John says, “I buy my clay from a man in Cornwall.” And he stamps his pot with a “JC.”

Plus the video was wonderful. Thanks for sharing the link with Sally and with us.

Pleasure. Google is your friend, but you have to ask it the right questions!

I’ve tried many questions but haven’t found the potter yet.

It was a lovely video, I agree. My SIL has suggested that the initials might be JT rather than JC so that’s where my googling efforts are now aimed. I found a very interesting site with Potters’ Marks but there wasn’t one like on our pots. I’ll let you know if I ever find the potter. 🙂

Thank you for this Ark. I loved the video but I don’t think this is the right potter. Of course, 50 years later, the potter may not be around any more……. It was interesting as Nancy said to hear that John Christie sourced his clay from Cornwall. Thank you for trying for me. 🙂

Good morning Sally, gorgeous cake!👍 For the pottery, why don’t you go on line and try and contact Paul Martin? He used to present Flog it! on bbc. I believe he is originally from Cornwall and always knew about the Cornish pottery, painting metal ware. It’s worth a try. Have a good day and take good care love Judith xx

Thank you, Judith, for that interesting idea and I have followed it through. I’ll let you know if he gets back to me but I expect he is a very busy man. Take care.:)

I will, of course. I’ve also been in touch with the gallery in Truro where I think they were bought and they just got back to me to say they will investigate! Very hopeful. 🙂

I tried looking for your potter on a Cornish potter site but couldn’t find anyone with the initials JC

I found one who sells in The Guild of Ten in Truro and emailed her but sadly, it’s not her. Thank you for trying! 🙂
