Copper Beech, Mating Butterflies and Wind Whipped Flowers

15 May

1   The wild winds of yesterday shredded next door’s Copper Beech leaves and blasted them against our windows like a dark red confetti. Lit up by the sun this morning, the leaf shows all its beauty, its veining and furry edges that I’ve never seen before.  Click on the photo to see an enlargement and all the minute detail.

2    The sun was shining and the wind had dropped a little so I went for a walk to collect photos of all the wildflowers in the hedges. In a sheltered spot I saw these Green-Veined White butterflies mating. Clicking on this one will show you the furriness of these beautiful little butterflies.

3   It was difficult taking photos of flowers blowing in the wind but somehow this whirlwind photo worked out, much to my delight.

Yes – and I have no idea how I achieved that effect! I’m crediting the wind but I have no ide! I’m hoping someone who knows about photography might tell me. 🙂

Great photos and I can relate to the wind. Where we are living now the wind is relentless. We had to tie the bench down to the deck!

Such winds for you too! There was such a fierce gust that it tore our Silver Birch out of the ground. It seems okay now it’s replanted and re-staked…. 🙂

Pink valerian. Glad to know the name as someone gave me some at a plant swap. Haven’t decided where to plant it yet.

I find it is often the case that when we have sun and flowers, there is always at least a breeze if not wind.

    0.1°C this morning.

It grows in our hedges and spreads like mad down here. I wouldn’t put any in my garden unless I had a big space to fill! There’s a lovely white variety too. The nights and early mornings are still very cold here too, but not quite that bad! 🙂

Thanks for the warning. I will leave it in a pot for the time being.

We are – but so have you been too. I’m very glad your drought is over and hope plants are springing back to life. 🙂

There are lots of bits of leaves stuck to our windows. This was the biggest and best and glowed with the sun coming through. 🙂

The leaf is like a cut copper sculpture. Absolutely beautiful.

I hadn’t thought of that – fine copper – it would be beautiful to have a permanent version. 🙂
