A Story, A Beach and Two Homes

20 Nov

Once upon a time, a very long time when I was maybe eleven years old, I cycled from Truro to Perranporth, about 10 miles. Sadly, I hadn’t realised how hot it was, had forgotten to take water with me so stopped at a farmhouse on the way to ask, very nicely as I was a well brought up child, if I could please have a drink of water. “No, clear off! ” was the response and I have never forgotten that moment. Today it’s a smart looking place that looks rather like a hotel. We lived in and around Perranporth for several years and today was a bit of a memory-jogger. I loved the beach and still do.

One summer, when I was seven,  we lived in the ground floor flat of a lovely big house, one of the terrace at the top to the left of the picture.

Another summer, we spent in a caravan and a tent on the Liskey Hill campsite and I loved every moment.

Imagine, denying someone water! I have to feel sorry for that dark soul.
I’m glad you have so many good memories to counter the bad!

Mean, wasn’t it? Maybe they’d had trouble with some youngster before – who knows? But I agree and feel sorry for the sadness they must have had to be so unkind to a hot and bothered child. I do have many good memories of my growing up in Cornwall. Cheers to you! 🙂

Memories. One bad, two good. I’d say you’re even Steven, even one leg up in life.

What a rotten reception over a glass of water.
    Shame on them.
Perhaps you should pop in, tell the current owners the story and see if you get a drink this time around? 😊
That way you would have a happy memory. Or at least one would hope so.

That’s a very good idea! Maybe I’ll get around to doing that. I have many more happy memories than sad ones of living in Cornwall as a child though that house does always give me that memory again. In fact that’s the only bad one. I had an idyllic childhood! 🙂

I have always picked that up from your stories, Sally, which is why the waterless bike ride surprised me.
You never know what may come of a polite knock at the door?
        😊

It must have really hurt me to be so dismissed for me to remember it nearly 70 years later! Perhaps I really do need to lay that ghost by knocking on the door! 🙂

I think you should. It would make another interesting story.
