Potting On, Poly Tunnels and A Petal

09 Jul

Volunteering at Community Roots is such a joy. The place and the people combine to make this a place where you can be put back together as you work and chat. Today three of us potted up countless baby asparagus plants, beautiful little things that together in their seed tray looked like a miniature forest of Christmas trees.

I hadn’t been up there for several weeks and the growth in the poly tunnels was remarkable, cucumbers ready for harvesting , red tomatoes likewise, beans galore – such abundance.

Walking about I spotted a beautiful poppy petal, blown off by the wind, and lying among the clover.

As you begin to enjoy the fruits of spring, winter arrived with a vengeance in Jo’burg, Temperatures dropped to minus four last night with some frost and in the morning half my veggies in raised beds were ‘nailed’.
Such are the joys of gardening!

It’s always strange to remember your winter comes as our summer does. Minus 4 is very cold and not many plants would like that. Joys of gardening indeed – the rain and cold this Spring and summer have rather spoiled some of our crops – and those of other allotmenteers.
