Autumn Leaves, A Poem and Optimism

02 Oct

The winds have brought the start of Autumn leaves covering our lawn.

Garden strewn with Autumn leaves

This poem by Elizabeth Jennings seems just perfect for today.

Song at the Beginning of Autumn – Elizabeth Jennings

Now watch this autumn that arrives
In smells. All looks like summer still;
Colours are quite unchanged, the air
On green and white serenely thrives.
Heavy the trees with growth and full
The fields. Flowers flourish everywhere.

Proust who collected time within
A child’s cake would understand
The ambiguity of this –
Summer still raging while a thin
Column of smoke stirs from the land
Proving that autumn gropes for us.

But every season is a kind
Of rich nostalgia. We give names –
Autumn and summer, winter, spring –
As though to unfasten from the mind
Our moods and give them outward forms.
We want the certain, solid thing.

But I am carried back against
My will into a childhood where
Autumn is bonfires, marble, smoke;
I lean against my window fenced
From evocations in the air.
When I said autumn, autumn broke

I have shared charts from Action for Happiness before. Here is October’s inspiration to lift us all in this troubled world.  You may need to download it to read it clearly or you could get it direct from http://www.actionforhappiness.org/optimistic-october?mc_cid=ba6f11f2dd&mc_eid=e01a9569da

      It’s a pretty time of year isn’t it? Your colours are so much more vibrant than ours, most of our leaves turn a murky brown! 🙂

    I always get those calendars too, love them. It was rather windy here too. Autumn is here!
