Waves, Lunch, and Cake

We went to the Blue Bar in Porthtowan for lunch. It has been all spruced up over the winter and was very inviting. Our lunch was delicious and the waves outside were huge and glistening in the sunshine.

This afternoon I made a St Clements Cake. It is an orange drizzle cake with lemon icing and is named after the English Nursery Rhyme,Oranges and Lemons, that goes

Oranges and lemons
Say the bells of Saint Clement’s
I owe you five farthings
Say the bells of Saint Martin’s
When will you pay me?
Say the bells of Old Bailey
When I grow rich
Say the bells of Shoreditch
When will that be?
Say the bells of Stepney
I do not know
Say the great bells of Bow
Here comes a candle to light you to bed
Here comes a candle to light you to bed
Pancakes and fritters
Say the bells of Saint Peter’s
Two sticks and an apple
Say the bells of Whitechapel

The older version goes like this with a very different last line!

Oranges and lemons,
Say the bells of St. Clement’s.

You owe me five farthings,
Say the bells of St. Martin’s.

When will you pay me?
Say the bells of Old Bailey.

When I grow rich,
Say the bells of Shoreditch.

When will that be?
Say the bells of Stepney.

I do not know,
Says the great bell of Bow.

Here comes a candle to light you to bed,
And here comes a chopper to chop off your head!
