The poet, Kim Ridgeon has written very movingly about isolation. Like me, he worries about those whose views, in isolation, are just bricks and graffiti, who have nowhere beautiful to walk and he expresses that so clearly. He feels he wants to do something, as we all do, and here he is, doing something – writing poems that touch our hearts and set us thinking. I thank Kim for the permission to share his poem with you here. 
Our walk today took us across the railway line and along some lovely lanes with the gift of open skies. We are so very lucky.
I feel the same need to ‘do something’ and though I write for myself, my gift right now is being able to sew. I have made eleven scrub bags which will be collected tomorrow and sent to wherever they are needed. Although I am a political animal, I rarely show that here but I have very mixed feelings about being an amateur sewist doing my bit along with everyone else in the national movement to sew scrubs, caps and bags when our government has let the side down so very badly. NHS and other care workers are dying for lack of PPE. Clapping on Thursdays is good but proper funding over the last ten years would have been much better.

Cath Cullen Hi Sally, I keep meaning to say that our Ellen received a sewists’ scrubs and small gift in it in her West Midlands hospital and was so delighted with it. Now she can take home her one set of scrubs to wash! Also sent her the Maya Angelou rainbow talk which I loved, and she’s one of my rainbows. Thank you for scrubs and Maya. X

Quite. If the NHS hadn’t been so underfunded and understaffed over the last 10 years we wouldn’t need to be in lockdown. All this is doing is giving the NHS chance to be resourced sufficiently to cope. Staying at home is not stopping the virus. And all these Nightingale hospitals are being built so that when we are ‘released’ there is somewhere for us to go. But it is always the same with a Tory govt. They run the NHS to the ground and privatise or outsource everything and then if we are lucky Labour get back in and build it up again, get waiting lists down and better efficiency, though even they were guilty of outsourcing and ending up paying the price when companies fail to deliver. Why can’t governments realise what a marvellous institution we have and fund and reward staff as they deserve. I admire your sewing skills and your big heart.

Being surrounded by countryside certainly does make me feel so very fortunate in these lockdown days and several neighbours have commented similarly … “At least we have all this …” we say waving a hand at open skies, meadows and woodland. I agree too that the situation in the UK with PPE is a shocking disgrace – it is barely credible that people who run the country have apparently allowed this appalling situation to occur.

You are so right, now they see what they have done, neglecting the NHS. You are lucky where you live, what great view to Carn Brae and the monument. So much open spaces.
