About Me
I am a wife, a Mum of four, including twins, and now a Granny. I’ve been a teacher of teenagers (and loved it) and am now a Humanist Celebrant conducting non-religious ceremonies. I take great delight in helping couples plan their unique and very special ceremonies for weddings and baby-namings.
I grew up in Cornwall and regard it as my home though I spent too many years away. I now live here again, with a just-about view of the sea from our bedroom window and only a 10 minute drive from the North coast (Porthtowan) and 20 minutes from the south (Falmouth)
I sing in three choirs, cook and bake, knit and sew, garden, read, walk, take photos, watch the birds, am learning to play the piano, volunteer at the Royal Cornwall Museum and have volunteered in South Africa, love my family and my friends and love cooking for them and am generally a happy and positive sort of individual.
I am passionate about equality and human rights and am known to stand up for what I believe in. I am the Great Granddaughter of a Suffragette!
My decision to write this blog came after reading the blog ‘Three Beautiful Things’. I had recently lost my dear friend of many, many years to a brain tumour, and became even more aware, as you do when someone close to you dies, of my own mortality and decided to record three things, however simple or prosaic, that had given me pleasure each day. There are some days when that is not as easy as it sounds but writing this blog has made me focus on the positive even on the grey days…and there are grey days – mostly those days when arthritic pain bites harder than usual.
Initially writing just for my own satisfaction, I am now getting enormous added pleasure when people ‘comment’, ‘like’ and ‘follow’ and I can see that people all over the world have read about my beautiful things. So, thank you all for reading. Your visit is much appreciated.
P.S. Because people have asked – my photos are taken on the day of posting and are not messed with in any way! If I am using old photos i.e. when going back to report on a holiday for instance, or perhaps for a Photo Challenge, I always make that clear.

Hello. Like you I love Pill Creek. It is so beautiful!
My husband and I visited it last week and it brought back many happy memories.
My Grandfather, Great Aunts and Great Grandmother used to live there. My Grandfather’s name was Ramsay Beatty and he and his mother lived in Quay House and Quay Cottage, which are just to the left off the photo you took when you were 6, I think. Please can you let me know what date the photo was taken approximately?
My mother was Jennifer Beatty and her father got remarried to Norah Beatty, after my Grandmother died.
I was wondering whether you/your parents might have known any of them? One of my great Aunts had the surname Bluett.
Do you have any other photos of this bit of the creek, I could look at? I’m especially interested in anything pre 1960 (when I was born) and would love to have any pictures of Quay Cottage, Quay House and gardens (which extend both in front and behind the lane).

Hello! My name is Tanja and I’m a writer of children’s books from Germany. I’m so excited to come across your blog! I found it when I googled Jeremy Visick. I understand the author is your father? I recently picked up the book in my parents’ house and read it for the first time in maybe 30 years. I remember it was one of my favorite books when I grew up. When I reread it now I found that it still has a special appeal to me. It is one of those books that are written so (seemingly) easy and basic but carry so much. What I love the most (unsurprisingly) is the way it connects the two 12-year-old boys of two very different times and shows us how we are all the same, same hopes and fears, only the circumstances of our lives change. How lovely to hear from you! I love how you speak of my Dad speaking to you through time and space. He does that for me too! You’ll find lots of references to Jeremy Visick in the blog if you put the name into the search bar on the right. I show you the Martin gravestone that set everything off in Dad’s head and tell you about the musical play that came out of it last year.
Dad always said that the book almost wrote itself. I’ll find a piece he wrote about the writing and share it here for you. It might take me a day to two to find it. I think, as a fellow writer, you’ll find it very interesting .

Just wanted to say a huge thank you for your blog about your Majik Table and researching the advert from the 1930s.
We have a much loved similar table and moving from a farm to a Victorian semi we are reluctantly selling it. When we dismantled we found the same markings as yours. Searched endlessly for information with no success then discovered your post with the image of the original advert Delighted to understand more about the history of the table. Very sad to be letting it go but glad we can add a little provenance

We have ours in a Victorian semi and when extended it fits all 14 of the family around it and totally fills the dining room! Mrs Smith I have just recently found your blog and enjoy reading it daily. Just to let you know that your amazing lessons and the warmth of your spirit inspired me to teach and I have since become a headteacher in a Doncaster Primary school . I was at Hayfield school when your own children were there and regard my years there as halcyon . You taught me in my younger years at the school and your choice of texts ( Goodnight Mr Tom and The Dark Behind The Curtain) have stayed with me to this day . I am now 42 and felt compelled to tell you how incredible your lessons were knowing just how to motivate and reach out to our young selves. What a delight to hear from you and saying such lovely things! I am so pleased to hear that you are now a Headteacher in a primary school (which one?) That is just fabulous and I bet you have the same warmth of spirit to make your school a welcoming and happy place for your staff and pupils despite all we hear in the press.
There are times when I miss being in school, Book Week being one, but, as you may have gathered, I am involved in the most fabulous theatrical project! I am reading and researching and writing and it is all the most glorious challenge. I used to think that 70 was old but not a bit of it! I am as full of enthusiasm as ever, and, having two new hips, am able to stomp around with the rest of them!

Focusing on the beautiful things definitely leaves little room to focus on the grey things of a day. I love this idea. I began taking pictures most days over this past winter to find the beauty in each day as a way to make it through and now it is finally spring 🙂

Belated hello from Türkiye… just wanted to say “thank you”, I appreciate your recent ‘follow’, knowing how many interesting and entertaining blogs there are out there. It’s been a while I know, but a storm knocked out our village internet and phone, hence the delay!
Blogging since June 2013, my little corner of the world tries to offer an eclectic smattering of posts, from basic amateur photography, to sharing my travel adventures over the decades, as well as day-to-day happenings here on our fruit farm in southern Turkey. Apologies for the long absence – we had a fairly rough start to the year but things are starting to settle down and I now have some free time!
We’ve been adopted by a new cat. Another stray found his way to the House of Crazy Cat Ladies and refused to leave. He was starving and his fur was all unkempt and dirty so I think he’d been out a while. We posted his picture all over Facebook and in both vets in town but no-one came forward for him so we got him all checked out with the vet and registered. He has ears like the ones on Batman’s cowl so we called him (Master) Bruce. He’s a little savage but he definitely seems happy here and he’s getting no end of cuddles and bedtime stories (for real – had to read him Dune last night ’cause he wouldn’t leave me alone and kept pawing at my book).
That’s the only real good news I’ve got to share from the past few months but it’s enough to keep me going and things are thankfully looking up!

It’s the 200th anniversary of the first publication of Pride and Prejudice so that was the theme this year. It’s one of the best I’ve seen in recent years and made with all natural materials which is an added bonus, as always.

I have very much enjoyed browsing through some of your posts today… I feel we have a lot of similar thoughts on finding the beauty in everyday things and the world around us… the simple pleasures in life. I also love Cornwall, have visited many times since my children were very young, my daughter went to uni in Falmouth which gave me more excuses to visit! Although I haven’t grown up there as you have, whenever I visit, it feels like home. I hope to live there one day in the future! I look forward to seeing/reading more of your posts 🙂

I opened my email inbox yesterday morning to find a lovely message from a good friend and numerous links to all manner of things – funny YouTube videos, pictures, inspirational quotes and blogs (yours included).
It’s been a rough couple of weeks and we often send each other ‘grumbly day survival emails’ as a pick-me-up at times like these.
Your blog truly is a pick-me-up and whether you actively seek out these beautiful moments in life to capture and share with the world or whether you simply stumble upon them as only people who look at the world around them with an open heart and mind can – you have my thanks.
Out of curiosity, I clicked the ‘About Me’ section and was dumbstruck when I saw your picture.
It’s you!
I won’t reveal myself (these things are always better when done anonymously, right?) but you taught me English in high school.
So, while I have the opportunity (and the blanket of anonymity), I’d like to confess that having you as my teacher, however briefly, inspired me to become a teacher myself.
It’s taken me a while to figure out what direction to take my life in and I’ve become a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none but I decided last year, after a lot of thought, that teaching is what I want to do and I’m working on it.
I don’t know if you realise the profound effect that you had on a lot of us as a teacher, a woman or a truly decent human being in a world where acts of real human decency are something to marvel at and cry over (or is that just me?) but I feel that you should.
You’re one of the kindest, most compassionate people I’ve known in my 25 years and you’re still top of the ‘coolest teachers’ list a few of us discuss when we occasionally meet up for lunch.
You taught me more than you know and inspired me a great deal so from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

What you have said is what I always tried to do and be – but one rarely finds out if what one has aimed to do has succeeded – so thank you too.
I am very grateful to your thoughtful friend for showing you my blog (and it is a mixture of actively seeking the beautiful to counteract the bad and of stumbling across wondrous things) and very glad that you had a look at the About Me page!
I would love to know who you are one of these days when you would like to tell me.
I think you must have been about 18 as I retired in 2006 so you may know that I spent my last few years at school in the best job in the world – teaching pupils as ever and teaching trainee teachers and bringing them on into a brilliant profession. I wish you all the very best in your choice. It seems to me that you, too, have the heart to become a very good one.

As surprised as I was about this fortunate discovery, I’m grateful for the opportunity to let you know that you did succeed, and coming from someone who (let’s be honest) isn’t really fit for institutionalised education in the first place and for a number of reasons – from rock bottom self-esteem to a turbulent home life – dreaded getting up every morning only to face another day of school, to come out the other end and (eventually) find the right path and find some peace in myself was a huge leap and you played a part in that.
‘Actively seeking the beautiful to counteract the bad’ is a great way to blog (and live), and wholly necessary, I feel. One is nothing without the other but choosing to seek out the beauty in the ugliness of the world at times is damn hard and I hold a deep appreciation for those who manage it, especially at darker periods of their life.
We didn’t have much interaction towards the end of my school experience as I left in 2005 and I was 13, I think, the year you taught me English but I still remember you marking a piece we did on our ‘ideal world’ and telling me that I had a ‘wonderful way with words’. It kept me writing, even when all that would come out was terribly depressing monologues full of self-pity. I’m sure I was a joy to teach haha 😉
I kept up with the news on the school website for a while and I saw the work you were doing overseas. I have no doubt that you were greatly missed when you left but to continue to help others and be a part of something fulfilling and worthwhile when a lot of us would be passed out in the garden by lunchtime after a fair few cold ones and breathing a sigh of relief having finally escaped the dreaded teenagers after so long is awesome.
I don’t think I could ever teach high school. It must take a lot of guts and a true passion for it but I remember how awful I was as a teen and I don’t think I’m brave enough to face that every day haha. Teaching adult literacy is probably the easier way out but still a challenge and a rewarding one, I reckon. I took the course last year as a student to see what I was letting myself in for and I loved it. A great mix of ages, nationalities and levels of experience who actually WANT to learn more. It’s gonna be an interesting journey but a great one all the same so thank you for giving me the motivation to do it.

Not everyone is suited to the sort of education we provide in schools – my own son was one such and he now is teaching English as a second language and has the same feelings as you about the students of all ages and all nationalities who really want to learn. I’m not sure it’s the easy way out to teach adult literacy. These students will undoubtedly be people who found learning hard and dispiriting as youngsters and will need your sensitive and empathetic understanding of that before you can begin to teach. Who better than you, given your first paragraph?
Now you’ve given me the clue of your initials, I shall probably spend the night going through the names of the many thousand young people whom I taught!

Thank you for telling me about your son. I’ll do my best to remember that when I’m second-guessing myself about this choice to pursue teaching. I’m not sure what it is about teaching but my tutor from last year’s course told me that she had difficulty adapting to a school environment too when she was younger and struggled a lot with the teaching styles but was dead set on becoming a teacher herself. I suppose that everyone learns differently and generalised structures of study don’t suit everyone through no fault of the teachers. We were all at different levels in her class and for some, English wasn’t their mother tongue so most of the set work was tailored to us. I can imagine that is a great deal harder with larger classes of students but the encouragement and positive reinforcement I remember from your classes was the same and sometimes that matters just as much.
I’ll certainly keep in touch. It’s been an absolute pleasure reading through your blog posts and seeing how you’re doing these days. Your ‘Grand baby’ is beautiful, by the way.
I’ll let you know how I get on with the course!

Hello. I have looked at your blog now and I think it is fantastic. I absolutely crave the tranquility and love of the simple things that comes across from your posts. I too am passionate about equality and human rights but this has become lost of late amongst dealing with the personal crisis I have been going through. Your blog (and the poem you sent by Mary Angelou) has given me the inspiration to lift myself up and again reach for the stars, as I had done in my former life. Well, you hardly need more comments, but I will chime in that your photography is beautiful. Thank you for taking the time to share them. There is no pink where I am; it is mud season for us and the world is covered with snow changing to mud – this is northern New York, not far from Montreal actually, so barely in America. Mud season has its own beauty, of course, but I am not a photographer, and am pretty near-sighted, and hate wearing glasses. You see my personal eccentricities limit me.
In case you follow back the blogs of commentors, I should warn you that mine is nearly exclusively Bible commentary that I write. As a humanist, you might be disappointed when you got there. I am myself Anglican, though in America that might be somewhat different than in England. But my wife is the priest in this parish, ordained two years ago. The only thing on my blog you might be interested in – though of course the Bible commentary is brilliant and shouldn’t casually be missed – is that I post any poetry I write as well. I assure you it is not “pious” in particular.
Kathryn and I were in England for our honeymoon 40 years ago – we thought we had better go before financial restraints got the better of us. We were in Cambridge, then up to Hadrian’s Wall, then to Edinburgh, then to Stratford-on-Avon. We didn’t get to Cornwall and have always regretted that and the hundreds of other places we missed. It was so beautiful, everything we saw. Even London impressed us as beautiful as we passed through.
Well, on line I tend to be terminally chatty so I will stop this.

I sing in three choirs, cook and bake, knit and sew, garden, read, walk, take photos, watch the birds, am learning to play the piano, volunteer at the Royal Cornwall Museum and have volunteered in South Africa, love my family and my friends and love cooking for them and am generally a happy and positive sort of individual.

My Mum was a very positive person too and taught me that every age has its benefits and is to be relished and to be made the best of. I’m lucky that I am well (apart from arthritic pain), that I still have the man I love with me (47 years and counting) and that I live in Cornwall, one of the loveliest places on earth.

Hi, Mybeautfulthings! I admire you for being able to fit in so many beautiful things into your life. I am 78 and love beautiful things too. I am still with the man in my life. We have our 57th Anniversary coming up this year. We live in a beautiful area of the Illawarra of NSW, Australia. We still love life but as we get older we feel everything we do takes a lot longer. Old age makes you slow down a lot!

Sally – I so need your help. I have just started a blog on wordpress and I can see you are lightyears ahead of me in terms of presentation. I am trying to learn but every third word is meaningless jargon! I am sure it was the same for you at the beginning. I don’t think I write in the same style as the other ‘garden’ blogs but it is in a similar vein. I think you have a lovely idea for a blog here – lots of fascinating information – and one I shall enjoy following. 🙂
My first thought looking at your blog was that there was a lot of reading but plenty of blogs do have lots to read! Pictures of foxes/ other wildlife would probably attract attention from your readers. Think magazine perhaps rather than newspaper. That’s my take anyway. Everyone does it differently and in their own way. I think that’s the most important thing – to be yourself, to write what you care about and in your own style!
Do you take photos? That’s something I have developed a lot since I started. Subscribing to the WordPress newsletter is useful too.
I think that’s probably enough for now! As you say, there is so much to learn and it does take time! Do ask questions; I’m very happy to help if I can.

In my youth I knew one other school mate who shared my name. Strangely, as an adult I’ve met several with the moniker, and one became a devoted friend. Lovely to meet you and thanks for becoming a “Follower.” We are on opposite sides of the globe, but do have numerous interests in common.

Thanks for stopping by my blog- glad u liked the article- it means we share the same idea about sun safety which is so important and it’s always nice to meet like-minded people! It also brought me to your blog 🙂 (That’s 2 good things already!!) I love the idea of “accentuating the positives”. I used to be an avid diary writer and at some point when the pace of life got so busy I at least found time to jot down 3 good things about my day and like you said -it keeps the focus in the right place. I also try to get my daughter to tell me 3 good things about her day at school so she too can focus on the positives. I think this is a lovely idea- thanks for sharing xx

I love this idea for a blog. I think too often people get bogged down with what is going wrong with their lives but don’t see the little things that often make it special. It sounds like you have this gift. And what a place to live too – North Cornwall! I have very many happy memories of walking along the stunning coastline. Carry on with the great, uplifting work!

Sounds like you have had a well rounded life. I hope that I can see the world and do some things in the way that you have. I came to your blog through David Heilmann’s photo blog. I am currently living in Canada, having left Buckinghamshire a year ago. I love your blog and it’s simple reminders of the UK. Port Isaac is a beautiful spot but you are right about things getting expensive. Petrol today was £1.50 a litre! We visited your beautiful country last Autumn and couldn’t believe how far we could travel for our money! We did get some amazing photos of the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and lots more on our wonderful road trip from Prescott to Denver and then back to San Francisco on the train.
We are away from tomorrow, going to our son’s wedding in Senegal – another adventure- so I won’t be posting for over a week but I’ll check out your photos on my return.

Thanks for liking my Piano man post. I wanted to stop by and see your blog and I am a little jealous to discover that you live in Cornwall. I say this because Port Isaac is on my wife’s and I bucket list of destinations and you only live about an hour away. I discovered that stunningly beautiful town on Doc Martin (the British TV show, just in case you haven’t heard of it) and they film part of it there. I’ve been to England several times, the last time in August 2011, but it’s getting so expensive don’t know if I’ll actually make it, but I’m hoping.
