I was inspired by a blogging friend, Ute, to blog about the scents in our garden. I always want plants to give me more than one thing – colour, scent, texture, flowers, berries and we have lots that have scent as their first attribute. The main scented flowers are just outside the kitchen and along the steps up to the garden.
1. Heliotrope – also known as Cherry Pie because that is the scent.
2. Lavender – you’ll all know this one
3. Nemesia – smells of vanilla, a favourite of mine.
4. Sweet Peas – smell of honey
5. Dianthus – a sweet clove scent
6. Night scented Stock, a favourite from my childhood and a perfume know as Night Flowers to Daughter No 2 who in toddlerhood would wake up in the night. She was taken out to smell the Night Flowers and would then settle.
and there are all the herbs which are lovely to brush by – Sage, Rosemary, Mint and various Thymes, from next door’s garden, Jasmine and from a bit further away, the gorgeous smell of newly cut grass.

You do have such wonderful scents in your garden. Such a variety, they are all so beautiful too! Your garden is almost like one of those famous ones in Cornwall. 🙂 I do love the chimney pots full of plants.

But it’s small compared with those! I inherited the chimney pots from my Mum who had them in all her gardens, the collection getting bigger all the time. They called the house in Cusgarne, “Chimneypots” because there were so many. 🙂

What a lovely idea to grow flowers for their scent. I loved my jasmine when it was in flower and the ornamental orange tree but that’s it. I won’t count the queen of the night as she only flowers one night and usually when I’m asleep. The sweet peas are lovely. You are so lucky to grow these. I’ve failed miserably with planting theres

What a lovely six. I remember Night-scented Stocks and also Nicotiana. They were my favourites. But I am convinced we used to have warmer evenings for the scent to permeate the air. Now I feel it is a little chilly in the evening despite being summer!

I think you are right especially about Nicotiana which we have stopped planting as it doesn’t smell as it did. I hadn’t thought of it being the cooler evenings but you may well be right. 🙂

The lime green nicotiana (which I like) isn’t actually scented, but I believe the pink and white ones still are.

I didn’t know that Nemesia had a scent. I will have to check about this. I think I could get some for my garden.

It’s called ‘Wisley Vanilla’. and I bought the plants from Sarah Raven. It’s doing really well. 🙂

Beautiful! Along with near the house, I plant winter flowering magnolia further away. In grey winter, I am pulled out by it to sniff the lemongrass fragrance, and am always happier for the little stroll

I shall look out for winter flowering magnolia – that sounds very interesting. We love Choisya too for Spring scent. 🙂
