Six on Saturday – Hannah and the Tulips

27 Apr

Storm Hannah came in overnight and though I first though the tulips had survived, they were a little the worse for wear so we decided to cut our losses and cut them for indoors. Thanks to the suggestion from Nancy of Spirit Lights The Way

2.  The Edible Garden

In fact, we have lots of edible bits in our garden including the veggie boxes and the herbs but this trough has herbs and edible flowers as well as salads right by the kitchen door. I have planted up all the little plug plants that we bought at a local nursery.  The tiles at the back are Victorian from a fireplace in the house I lived in when I was five years old. Mum collected them when the fire place was changed and I love them. They show various land based tasks like seed sowing and scything.

Beautiful rows

3. Clematis

We have three spots in the garden with Clematis Montana Elizabeth . This one is growing up an old tree stump near the back shed and the scent is gorgeous. We can smell it from the arbour which is just across the way.

4. Twin Tulips

Most of our Tulips are over but this pair recently turned up in the tubs that held the purple and white ones. It’s an oddity.

5.  The Geum  in the curved wall is bringing wonderful pops of colour where all the Spring bulbs are now finished.

6.   A treat

We treated ourselves to two fabulous plants the other day, two Scilla that are already quite startling in their beauty. I love the colour. They are in a bed where Agapanthus will appear later in the season.

Scilla – Caribbean Jewels

Pop over to The Propagator for others in the SoS challenge. They are from all over the world with fascinating insights into other gardens.

The double tulip is brilliant! I had one too this year.

I love your edible garden with the tiles in the background. What flowers are you growing which are edible?

I love it too – especially being so close to the kitchen. 🙂

Love that shot of the garden. My geum hasn’t started this year, while everyone else’s is doing great. Yours is gorgeous. Hope mine catches up! I love that your mother kept the tiles. A woman after my own heart.

        You’re welcome!
But I can see why cutting them wasn’t your first thought ~ they look so nice lining the walkway.

Sorry that Hannah delivered such a blow to your blooms. I am also a geum fan and my ‘Mai Tai’ are poised to open soon, the earliest of mine. The names do crack me up — Flames of Passion?? It is lovely but has so much to live up to!

Indeed it does! At least it makes me smile every time I catch it beginning to blush. 🙂

The Geum is pretty and the tulip odd indeed. Love the Scilla – I must plant some of those in the autumn. Hannah has put paid to my tulips too, but other things are coming into flower now so I guess they have filled the gap.

Yes, there is always more beauty to fill the gap. It’s time to move those pots to their summer storage and decide what to do on the steps this year. I like to fill them with scented plants, Lavender (easy to find) and Heliotrope, much harder. We used to rely on Kehelland but not for the last two years. Chacewater filled the gap last year but they have none this year so we are on a Hunt! 🙂

Heliotrope is lovely, hope you are successful. Have you tried online nurseries?

I found a lone geum growing in one of my raised beds. I can’t wait to see what color it is.
