We went on a bit of a pilgrimage today to find the new statue of Millicent Fawcett, Leader of the Suffragists, in Parliament Square, the only statue to a female among eleven men!
The detail on the statue is fabulous – the fabric and folds of her coat, her leather boots, her jewellery and the stitching effect on her banner…
There was a beautiful border of bee laden Lavender just nearby.
Another of my heroes was in the square – Nelson Mandela, again with intricate detail in the bronze.

What a strong beautiful face Millicent Fawcett had/has…wonderful rendering of her person…

Isn’t it? Quite inspiring and after seeing the play, The Cause, the other evening and marching, it all felt so powerful and pertinent. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this. I love lavender and it’s so lovely in its natural state. Great pictures of the statues – so much detail!

These statues are truly splendid.
Love the lavender. I have loads of it in the garden and take cuttings to plant every year.

I love Lavender too but haven’t been successful with cuttings. They seem to dampen off and I gave up a few years ago. I buy new each year, reasoning that they only cost the same as a bunch of flowers and last all season! 🙂

I take 20 or 30 cuttings and plant them in pots with ordinary potting soil.
I usually get around a 40 -50% success rate; some of which I give away the others I will plant out.

Do you have a greenhouse or cold frame that you keep them in? 🙂

I used to put them in our shed, which has windows, but I didn’t think there was enough light so now I keep them outside, and move them around the garden depending on the temperature.
It’s almost winter down here but still sunny. I have eight cuttings on the go at the moment and they are all hanging in there!
If there’s any frost forecast than I’ll move them inside.

I haven’t been there for a while, I didn’t know they are there! My lavender blooms too in the garden!

WE have French lavender but I really prefer the simple English lavender and will revert to that next year. Do go and visit Millicent – she is amazing! 🙂
