KwaZulu Natal – Day 9

04 May

May 2nd 2018

We are in the Drakensburg Mountains, where my Dad was at some point in WW2. It feels a bit of a pilgrimage to be treading in his footsteps, seeing things he saw and he is in my thoughts as we take in all the grandeur.
We were up early to catch the Sunbirds collecting their nectar then after breakfast went on a walk to Belinda Falls, a pretty if a bit scrambly walk.

Later, after the gang had set off for their Grade 5, 5 hour walk up the mountains we went with the Leader’s wife to the Lake Jarred Overlook, another gentle and delightful walk spotting birds and flowers.

African Hoopoe

Grasshopper whose wings flash red when he flies

Beautiful remains of a Grasshopper, as yet unidentified

Love the sunbird, what a beauty in the bottlebrush tree. How long are you out there for Sally?

18 days! We are with the Ramblers and doing lots of walks though some of the gang are doing some amazing climbs and scrambles! 🙂

Mmmm… climbs and scrambles wouldn’t do it for me, but a nice walk sounds perfect. Lovely scenery.

The Sunbird looks like a Greater Double Collared Sunbird and the Grasshopper: I’ll take a flyer and say it’s a Green Milkweed Locust – (Phymateus viridipes).

So glad you are having a real blast. Watch out for sunburn. Even if the weather is muggy down there. If you don’t know already the African sun can be wicked on pale skin.

I just knew that you would come up trumps for me! Thank you so much! I am being very careful with the sun, well covered both in suncream and long sleeves. Thank you for the advice. 🙂
