We had the shortest walk today in the gathering gloom, just around the block but Lovers’ Lane looked lovely despite, or maybe because of, the mistiness.
A splash of purple caught my eye on our return and, yes, there was another sign of Spring, the first Iris Reticulata in flower.
I came across this charming poem this afternoon and though there has been no hail today, the poem certainly catches the essence of the hailstorm I drove through last Thursday on my way to singing. You can imagine the noise on the top of my very old and much loved little soft top Beetle – a ‘storm of hornets’ indeed!
Hailstorm – Kay Ryan
Like a storm
of hornets, the
little white planets
layer and relayer
as they whip around
in their high orbits,
getting more and
more dense before
they crash against
our crust. A maelstrom
of ferocious little
fists and punches,
so hard to believe
once it’s past.

Misty Lovers Lane…..’Or maybe because’, I think. A romantic spot. Here in the wilds of Canada, lovers lanes tend bend closer to ‘Spooky Hallow’. Not sure why (insert smiley face here).
Hailstone poem….I doubt one would find many poems on hailstones. Nor one that captures the sting.
Irises, they are such flirts.

It did capture the sting didn’t it? You are right too about the flirty Iris, whichever variety they may be. 🙂

Yeah, Irises, they just show up flaunting their shtufffs, then disappear down a rabbit hole or something.
I confess to pulling a bunch out 15 years ago. Last spring in the very spot, what returned was one Iris. I am convince it seen it stick its tongue at me.

They do just vanish, don’t they? Iplanted lots to flower with the baby Daffodils but each little Iris Reticulata has flowered on its own and the daffs are still in bud – all beautiful on their own but not as spectacular as I had planned. 🙂

How lovely. We are so far from spring I can’t even imagine flowers starting to bloom now. Sigh!

It has been 11C today – that is unusually warm and the flowers are responding. Hope we don’t get a cold snap to damage them. 🙂
