This post from Nancy came in today and landed at the most appropriate time as I have spent the morning sorting some family papers, reading wonderful bits of family history and, at last, throwing out the condolences cards sent when my lovely Dad died in 2004. It was lovely to read the messages again and I have kept a couple for the family history archive. I will keep going….. Mum’s to do next. It is not a sad task but life affirming in a strange way. Theirs were good lives.
In amongst the papers was this photograph of my lovely Mum who spent her career in Camborne and Redruth, teaching deaf children. Many wrote to say how inspiring they found her.

This photo was also in the drawer, of me and the other Mums who had our babies on Christmas Day 1975! Both photos were in the local papers.

Our walk today was just along local streets once the rain had stopped. These planters caught my eye.
Welcoming doorstep
We’d like some advice please from blogging friends in the US, specifically those who know the East. We are planning a road trip next May from Atlanta to Washington DC, though the Blue Ridge Mountains, visiting the Shenandoah Valley, maybe going to Baltimore. Where should we not miss? We will be having a week in Atlanta with family and will then have two weeks. We would be very grateful for any thoughts.

Savannah, Georgia take the tour trolley and maybe meet Forest Gump. Charlestown, SC, the slave museum, and the old town market. Myrtle Beach, SC if you like lots of Boardwalk lights, and Ferris Wheels, not like London’s wheel but good. Nashville, TN – The Grand Old Opry, great food and the nicest people you’ll ever meet. It also has a reproduction of the Parthenon from the Acropolis – haven’t seen it but supposed to be amazing. The Battleship North Carolina in Yorktown, and of course the Blue Ridge Parkway, gorgeous! Washington DC – see the Vietnam Memorial, to me it’s a sacred place – well as the usual sights – read Dan Browns book The Lost Symbol if you can before hand. I agree with nrhatch’s suggestions – Williamsburg is fabulous, have dinner in one of the places that do authentic period meals, and visit Jamestown settlement if you can. Eat seafood from the Chesapeake Bay, soft shell crab, or crab cakes. There are many Civil War sites in Virginia, see Gettysburg, PA if you get that far north. Have fun, take your time, the south is full of wonder people …

I would guess you are in the middle right in front of the Christmas tree.
I lived in Alexandria, Virginia for 8 years. (over 40 years ago) It is right across the river from D.C. Lived there as a single young girl and visited so many places in the area and have fond memories. 🙂 Bad place to meet men. 🙁 So left. lol
I hope you get to visit Williamsburg, Virginia as mentioned by another reader. I envy you your visit. Haven’t been back there since I left. Look forward to your pictures. Know I will be teary eyed as I see them.

Advice for your trip ~> Great Smoky Mountain National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, Shenandoah Valley and Skyline Drive are all gorgeous. One leads to the next to the next.
If you like history, Monticello (Thomas Jefferson’s plantation) in Charlottesville VA, Mount Vernon (George Washington’s plantation) outside DC, and Williamsburg VA are a treat.
The Smithsonian Museums (8-10 contiguous buildings) in DC are great and FREE.
